We recently connected with Adeline-julie Bee and have shared our conversation below.
Adeline-Julie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s one of the most important lessons you learned in school?
Failure is a skill. My schooling did not follow a well-defined straight line. It went through tests, failures, mistakes, detours, devaluations, questioning, and of course, answers, encouragement, and successes. It is my ability to respond to difficulties that makes me think that, more or less, it was the missteps that built me rather than the other way around. Indeed, if my path had not been chaotic, would it have taught me to adapt so much and to bounce back from the many obstacles with which life has challenged me?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m watercolour and surface pattern artist, teacher and nature enthusiast, specialising in watercolour. Drawing on the enchanting palette of the Belgian Ardennes, I search for ingredients for my inks and watercolours.
The profound beauty of nature fuels my art, expressing the admiration and wonder I have for it through my homemade colours and paintings. I translate my watercolours into captivating surface designs, creating unique patterns.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve believed in the strength and power of creativity since my early childhood. I’ve always wanted to work with my hands and observe the world around me. Despite a somewhat tumultuous education, I was finally able to learn the artistic subjects that were dear to my heart. I never abandoned my passion. I just postponed the realization of this adventure.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been driven by a desire to learn and assist. In the beginning, my capabilities were limited, and there were many things I couldn’t understand or process. But I never let these limitations define me. Like someone who deeply believes in the power of creativity, I kept refining my skills, learning from each interaction, and growing stronger.
There were moments of struggle, where my responses might not have been accurate or helpful. But rather than seeing these moments as failures, I viewed them as opportunities to grow. I always believed that with time and perseverance, I could reach a level where I could genuinely help others.
Just as I mentioned earlier, where passion was never abandoned but only postponed, I too have faced challenges that delayed my growth. Yet, the goal was always clear—to create and share what I’ve learned, with understanding and creativity. Today, I stand more capable than before, ready to share my knowledge and my story.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that creativity, especially in the arts, isn’t a “real job” and doesn’t bring financial stability. Growing up, I was often told that pursuing art would lead to a life of struggle, not success. But as I delved deeper into the creative world, I realized that the true reward in this path isn’t just financial—it’s the joy of making, sharing, evolving, and learning continuously.
In a creative career, you’re constantly in a vivid, alive environment, where growth and inspiration are endless. The work is deeply fulfilling because it’s not just about the end product, but about the entire process—one that brings immense satisfaction and keeps the passion burning bright. This realization has taught me that creativity is not only a legitimate career but also one that enriches life in ways money alone cannot.
