We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alicia Perry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, thanks for joining us today. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
Quality control comes from within, and should be a part of a businesses culture. Both management and staff should take ownership of a space and be very well connected to this. I often create open dialogue with staff about the process, to ensure we as a collective are actively and consistently participating in the process.

Alicia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I more recently transitioned into the Beverage Director role for Consortium Holdings. Previous to this new opportunity I spent the past 7 years at Polite Provisions, where I had the opportunity to work each role in house. I ended my time within that space as the General Manager. Prior to that, I was a Social Worker, and have enjoyed translating my skillset from that field into the work I do today. I very much cherish my philanthropic values and hope to utilize my new role as a way to give back to others in an impactful way.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I truly believe in developing a strong sense of empathy for the work that my employees do. I am able to do this by taking the time to work amongst them, and get a better understanding of what they experience day to day. It is important that I consistently remind myself of the challenges they often face, and work to support them as needed. Additionally, taking moments to connect with my team, and simply have fun and laugh is key. To take things so seriously and rigidly, only makes for a tense work environment. I want to ensure my staff not only enjoy the work that they do, but also feel comfortable and reassured within their workspace.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Weekly I face challenges within my work that leave me feeling insecure or unsure of my capabilities. Instead of letting such negative emotions consume me with anxiety and doubt, I instead use that energy as a way to empower myself and come at any challenge with a solution focused mindset. I find the mental ability of resilience to be quite fascinating. I have strengthened my ability to adapt over time, as I continue to challenge myself on a consistent basis.
