We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Harvey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Melissa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Yes! I absolutely take vacations. Breaks are needed for your mental health. If you’re not at your best how are you expected to show up and operate your business in an effective manor? You can’t pour from an empty cup. As a business owner I never plan a vacation during my busy season. I think if you have the ability as a business owner to step away at a slower time to rejuvenate then you absolutely need to do that.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started Miley Cakez in 2016. I always enjoyed making desserts for people but honestly it can get costly. One day after being asked for specific treats from a friend I decided to take the leap and turn it into a business. Best decision I’ve ever made! When you’re doing something you love it doesn’t always feel like work. Creating recipes brings me peace. Cakes , cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, cake jars…. You name it and I can probably add my own spin on it. I usually ask my clients what their vision and theme are and build from there. As far as Mystical Moments goes that started from me hosting events in my own home. I love entertaining. I bought a lot of equipment that I personally liked and knew I’d use often then started renting them out. Photo Booth , bubble tents, champagne wall, and movie night set up. We’ve done several events now where clients have combined and bundled services from both businesses. I’ve done weddings , sweet 16’s, and birthday parties where these services were combined. It’s always fun .

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think the most challenging time for my business has been the pandemic. People couldn’t go outside let alone host parties and events that would require my services. I had to really think outside the box. Shipping became my best friend. Shipping kits for kids with DIY cupcakes and cookies were a major sell for parents looking for something fun to keep their children occupied. My drink menu was also huge during Covid. A new drink was introduced every week and the sold extremely well. Doing this helped keep my business open .

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Word of mouth honestly. When you find a product that you love tell people about it! That’s how small businesses thrive . I’d make small things and give them to people who I knew didn’t mind sharing about their experience. I’d also host small parties and display a lot of my inventory. People would try things out and if they liked it…… new customer!
