We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miranda Terry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Miranda , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have worked on has been a long ongoing project that I started summer of 2021. I have been working on writing my first musical album with artwork to go along with each song. Last summer I felt that I was lacking something in my creative journey so I started the book ‘The Artists Way’ by Julia Cameron, which I highly recommend to anyone wanting to dig deeper into their creative work. It completely changed my outlook on being an artist and how I personally want to function as an artist. It broke open the floodgates for me and songwriting and I began to write my own music. It all came from writing about my artwork, which was pretty magical. It’s meaningful to me because it combines both of my loves, art and music. I grew up playing music and it has always been a part of who I am- I just couldn’t find a way to express myself with it. This project has been a huge stepping stone and learning process for me in finding who I really am as an artist. I have learned that it doesn’t have to look or be one certain way, it just has to be raw and honest to who I am and it needs to feel right. This project is no where near being complete, but I feel fine with that. I am allowing it to unfold naturally and organically.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I started my degree in Studio Art at Texas State University in 2015. I specialized in painting and have had a successful time showing and selling my work, commissions and public art. I kept saying “yes” and the opportunities just kept flowing for me. That’s how I got my start. More recently in the last year, I was a part of my first two-person exhibition with Shaun Haugen and have been working on several commissions of paintings of buildings- which is a huge jump away from my normal abstract work that consists of painting, assemblage and installation. Again, I was approached for a big project and said “yes” and more opportunities kept flowing in that direction. What I am most proud of in myself is that I have tackled many different types of projects in my career thus far. I am not afraid to try something new or explore a new direction in my art practice. I’m not afraid to work with new people and clients and I really enjoy all the new experiences. I like variety and spontaneity in my everyday life and creative practice.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am currently pivoting in my life and career as I have had quite a few life changes recently. I married in January 2022, relocated to New Braunfels, started working full time as a personal assistant to an Interior Designer and Construction Supply company owner, and am expecting a baby girl any minute now. What I am most proud of is that I have still continued to make work through these life changes. I will always make time for my craft-whether that be a body of work for an exhibition I am working on, commission work, or my own personal work. The past 5 months while working full time, I’ve been learning how to juggle my new schedule and still make my artwork. As I am expecting a baby girl any minute now, I will soon be learning how to transition into motherhood as a full time working mom while still keeping my creative practice. What I have learned through this is that these adjustments are totally doable- they just take time and that’s okay. We shouldn’t rush life anyways.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspects of being an artist for me is the fulfillment I receive from creating something raw and honest from my soul. I feel a sense of release, renewal, and accomplishment. I feel clarity in my mind. To be a part of a community of people who do the same and the connection it provides is also extremely enriching and fruitful. Sharing your artwork with the world is just as important as creating it.
