We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jim Francis Meza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jim Francis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects has definitely got to be Radio podcasting. I come from a family of musicians and recently we found out through genealogy, that dad is actually related to Maria Felix Mexicos’ Golden Age darling. Its unequivocally clear that my passion for the arts specifically acting has something to do with my lineage. I find that all roads in my life undeniably lead to acting for the better part of my existence. Whether that looks like a camcorder the size of a cynderblock, doing home interviews and skits with Liz my beautiful sister or getting hired as a Psychic for a Psychic line which I have always credited as my first paid acting gig. In addition, mom always said you have the golden tongue and anyone you speak to listens until you talk their ear off. I think hardly, but in fact she is right. I could pretty much sell bacon to a Rabbi and Snow to an Eskimo. I found that when I was Introduced to radio roughly 10 years ago, I was smitten and was in Love head over heels. Furthermore, realizing the power you have to give a voice to those without a mouth piece is otherworldly and frankly gratifying. I envisioned myself as a master communicator fighting for the rights, and championing noble causes. What is near and dear to my heart is those voiceless, passionate, and never retrieving artists who bare it all on the line every chance they get. They try their luck at Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook and even Myspace platforms day in and day out hoping to God to catch a bone awaiting their big break. Being able to tell our stories so masterfully utilizing the radio medium is unmatched. Really only second to movie magic. However, it is fair to note that before movies were made, stories were told as soaps over the radio airwaves. It certainly goes without saying that radio sound bites are a lost art. Yet we find that through podcasts, which are essentially un produced organic radio shows, anything goes of sorts, we are able to once again rebirth the Radio and galvanized and reintroduce a whole new generation to the radio/video world stratosphere. I believe wholeheartedly that through this medium, we can make the difference, like the Joe Rogans, and Value entertainments, Almost Famous Podcast: LA Talk Radio & The Rubin Report & Flagrant just to name a few. Long gone are the days that a foil headed kid, who was misunderstood by most accounts couldn’t get a shot at being heard. Now it’s the norm and not the exception. Almost like the playing field is leveled under us and a sense of equality prevails. So go start your own radio and podcast, it is really at your fingertips. No longer a pipe dream but a reality. James Matthew Meza, is a prime example of not just a dreamer but a doer. He started his very first podcast in High School. I hear that kid is doing big things these days.
Jim Francis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a rennaisance man who reinvents himself every step of the way. I have dabbled in music, acting, written songs authored two books, Juicy Divas Confessions of a limo driver & Juicier Divas confessions of a limo driver respectively. I am a prolific Radio Podcaster a Visionary if you will. I am the self proclaimed Honorary MAYOR these days. Remember hurdles will come and go but it’s a trial by fire to ensure we are not going to fold easily. So my life has been a series of peeks and valleys, however I have bounced back each time by the grace of God. I like to think life is a sling shot, it sorta slings you into the unknown and its your job to make sense of the nonsense if you will and find your way back. It’s entirely your perogative whether you want to let the circumstances dictate your life and define you, or take life by the horns and ride that bull to kingdom come. Afterall, life is not determined by the cards you were dealt, rather by how you play your hand. It’s imperative that we get mentorship and never ever think we have surpassed our teachers. Keep your head up, but always keep your feet grounded. In every industry there are haters and naysayers. Remember, they are the fuel and lifeline to keep us motivated. It’s a necessary evil, a grandscheme of life that serves as a catalyst to prove them wrong. At the end of the day, God is in control. Oh, and did I failed to mention there’s room at the top for everyone.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I can be a trailblazer in my own niche. In addition, I have set the bar high for my son James Matthew Meza to climb passed it, rung by rung and hopefully across the finish line. I believe in team effort and collective partnership. That said, it’s highly important to help everyone as we climb the ladder of hierchies. It’s equally important to not spit on anyone on the way up, as it may hit your pretty face on the way down. I have a great knit tight support team that helps me stay grounded. In addition, I like helping the less fortunate and folks with Special Needs. It is imperative to have a why in life to know your purpose, your why if you like. Most importantly having a higher power to serve, The Lord and only through God almighty can your life be filled to the brim. Everyone is thirsty and in search of what to fill that void. Until, you find Jesus Christ of Nazareth, you’ll be searching and life no matter how successful will seem dull and empty.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My journey and trajectory has and always will be to help foster a sense of growth and positivity through the arts and radio air waves. By networking we grow together expand your horizons and fly ultimately together. I take great pride in facilitating friendships and cultivating a tight circle. That said, I’m always looking to collaborate with folks who are like minded individuals, visionaries that are pursuing their dreams vigorously want ing to expand and leverage their ties by teaming up with folks like myself.
