We recently connected with Michaela Dennis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michaela , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
My thoughts on family business is that if we truly want to break the generational curse that one might have is UNITY. We all have to be willing to work together. Most times only one person is willing to be the sacrifice. In this case if the family fully supported the individual to the fullest extent one could reach their goal much quicker. After one has reached their goal then another individual could be chosen and the cycle just repeats itself until everybody in the family is able to benefit or follow their dreams as well while being fully supported . I think one of the pitfalls is society has painted a picture that doing business with family is horrid…which in most cases experiences might have not been the best but if there is a clear action plan and everybody is on one accord and can reap the benefits it should flow. I personally have not had any personal experiences with family businesses but I do plan to help my children with their businesses and fully support them financially and physically to achieve greater success.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Michaela currently Florida based. I’m originally from Arkansas. I started my clothing line 6 years ago and have been a full time entrepreneur since. I got forced into entrepreneurship due to my 9-5 firing me . I decided from that day forward I would never let anyone control my income or have that power over my life or my family’s life. I love being a creative. I create one of a kind pieces that most people don’t have my brand is centered around catering to men and women bringing all the latest fashion trends. The problems I solve for my clients are simply supplying the demand. My customers never have to want for anything because I deliver and serve daily all while setting the tone. I’m most proud for never giving up and believing in myself even when I had no clue what the initial outcome would be . I’ve mastered the basics of running a business and teaching others how to scale and do the same. On top of still running my clothing line….I’ve dived deep into the financial industry doing credit repair and tax preparation which has been a major success for me and my clients. I’m able to educate and provide insight for the everyday entrepreneur who is just starting out so that they don’t make some of the mistakes I did in the beginning and can get a head start on their financial freedom and stability. I take pride in everything I do and I’m most thankful that in a world full of millions of people some being in the same industry as me my clients still choose me everytime.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn in life is sometimes what our parents might feel is the best route is not always aligned with our purpose and what we’ve been called to do. This causes many to suffer especially when you just want to “please” those who birthed you. A little back story for me is growing up in a era where I was taught if I didn’t get a college education I wouldn’t be able to be successful or make alot of money and I’d end up with a terrible job and have to struggle for the rest of my life. I tried the “norm” and found myself hating it because it just didn’t feel right. I ended up dropping out of college my first semester and went back home. During that time I ended up at little low end jobs paying nothing and it made me truly uncomfortable. The last job I worked which I actually loved ended up firing me and I was forced into entrepreneurship since then I’ve been a full time entrepreneur for 6 years my business has paid me more money than I’ve ever made at any 9-5. I’ve surpassed and exceeded every goal I’ve set and I am currently living in a new state 13 hours away from what I call home and I am getting to experience a portion of my dream life starting my own business got me here and for that I’m thankful that I didn’t settle for something I was just doing to “people please”.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I would say documenting my process helped me build a great reputation. I showed every thing from start to end and I am currently still building and growing. Showing my highs and lows of entrepreneurship while still influencing a generation that really doesn’t believe it’s possible. I also make sure I show up as my authentic self so whatever that looks like for the day that’s who you really get . I don’t try to put on a show or be somebody I’m not. I don’t possess over material things or use it to my advantage to attract customers. Just being the real me on and off the internet has served me the most.
