We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh Greene. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.
Josh, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Starting your filmmaking career is all about risk-taking.
Starting your own film production company at age 22 is a risk. Having just graduated from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Jack and I knew we needed to take risks in order to explore our potential. We felt that in order to continue being able to create our own projects, we needed to establish our own schedule. That way, we could have the time to continue developing stories that we feel this innate need to share with the world, while having the flexibility to direct and produce projects at a moment’s notice.
Of course, while risks sometimes come with a lot of rewards, they aren’t without their challenges either. At a great film school like USC, you may learn how to hone your storytelling craft and collaborate with others. But building your own company, attaining commercial clients, handling rejection, these are all lessons that we’ve had to teach ourselves. Being your own boss allows you to determine the outlook of your workload, but what happens when the work feels slow at times?
But all in all, I’d rather embrace the risks of creating something meaningful than to feel complacent working for something that doesn’t feel right.
It’s clear that throughout our filmmaking career, we will encounter lots of risks. I’m grateful we are exposing ourselves to some of these risks now so we are increasingly prepared for our future careers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Josh Greene and I’m an award-winning filmmaker from San Clemente, CA. At USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, I received a B.F.A. in Film and Television Production with a minor in screenwriting. During my senior year, I directed a thesis short film, Waves Apart, which was recognized as Student Academy Award® Nominee. After having its World Premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Waves Apart screened at the Cannes Film Festival: Emerging Filmmaker Showcase, where it won Best Student Documentary. After graduating, Jack and I co-founded Landport Productions, so we could tell the stories we felt most passionate about. Along with award-winning films, we’ve focussed on creating branded content with video projects that have received millions of views online. As we continue pitching, producing, and distributing commercial projects that support our clients marketing and storytelling needs, we are constantly developing independent narratives and documentaries that we plan to release under the Landport banner. Our goal is to keep on expanding our growing team of creative partners and continue challenging our abilities as directors.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a filmmaker is witnessing projects come to life. Since childhood, I’ve collected so many stories that I feel this undying need to share with the world. These can be stories that either I have experienced and collected personally, or stories of other people and places that I resonate with. I gravitate towards stories that connect with me on an emotional level and especially want to share stories that are being overlooked or under-appreciated by others. Thus, to be able to witness a project come to life from ideation to distribution is something that keeps me coming back for more filmmaking.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew just how many filmmaking grants and funding opportunities exist out there for filmmakers interested in exploring every avenue to fund their projects. If you have a good story to tell, there is going to be a person or an organization out there willing to take a chance on you and help you tell that story. I recommend any emerging filmmaker to explore all avenues of finding capital for their projects, including through fundraising.
