We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauryn Bass. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauryn below.
Lauryn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
My family is super supportive of me and anything that I do. So are my friends—let’s be clear that the friendship title is a big deal because not everyone is your true friend. But, that’s a totally different conversation. I don’t think there’s anything that could go inappropriately as far as my content goes because I create lifestyle and skincare content online. All I typically look for is engagement or interaction with my work, but keep in mind that because I am in media—a lot of my family is not always online.
With that being said, I am working hard to find my own community. I’m learning more about social media and working the algorithm so that people who are also interested in what I do can find me and I can build a new “family” so to speak, that is looking forward to my next article or post!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have my own mental health company named Blooming and Buzzing. It’s where Kings and Queens—that’s what I like to call those who tune in—can learn more about how to bloom or grown internally so that they can buzz externally whether that’s physically or socially. I record podcast episodes with people from all walks of life because I believe we all have something to share that can help others. I love learning from others, and I think that many times people just need a platform. So that’s what I provide, alongside what I’ve learned in Psychology as I studied and minored in that subject in college. I love to understand how people think and learn why they do what they do.
Experiences shape us into who we are. I also post motivational content or self-care tips. Just anything that the Black community or any underrepresented community can use to be uplifted. We need that—especially in times right now.
Outside of that, I believe that my name is also a brand. Anything that you see attached to “Lauryn Bass” or “Laurie Bee,” I plan for it to be of quality. I hope that when people think of me, they know that it’s going to be genuine.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
It’s been hard navigating the journalism industry. I haven’t gotten back into a television studio yet, so I’ve pivoted to being more behind the scenes. What I mean is, I am now getting more into print writing which is totally different from tv. I am now a Contributing Writer for BOSSIP! I write for their “Bolitics” column, which is where the politics stories are.
Switching from local news or lifestyle content, to writing about the world of national crime news or government happenings? Ask any of my close friends, that would’ve been unheard of! But now? I love it. It’s kept me informed and the BOSSIP team has been working with me to help me find my voice on a platform that believes in the Black Perspective being factual and true. An all woman team at that! It’s been such a blessing.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Hashtags! Reels! Paying attention to when your audience is active! Posting with niche content! Facebook groups! There are so many ways to reach our desired community but these are the sure fire ways that worked for me. Oh, and don’t forget programming and tailoring your SEO!
Just continue to post. Don’t think about how perfect it has to be. Schedule your content in advance so it doesn’t stress you out and keep going! Also, don’t forget to show love to others. Typically they’ll return the favor. It takes a village!
