We recently connected with Jenny Crawford and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jenny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
An incredible backyard transformation is dependent on more than good design. Execution and logistic management during the build phase is essential to completing a project on time and on budget. I only build up to two projects at a time and love the construction and build phase. I dedicate a good amount of my weekly time to site visits and project check-ins. This ensures the success and outcomes my clients desire and prevents costly mistakes. I have been told by the builders that I partner with that it is rare to see a designer stop in at a project as frequently as I do. This is something that sets me aside from others in my industry and elevates the client experience. I hand select plants that will be installed on my projects and I am on site to place them- a process I take very seriously. I am fluent in Spanish, which allows me to connect directly with the builders and nursery staff. I am very proud of the team I work with on installs and we have a great friendship that goes back many years. My clients can focus on what they do best and leave the landscape to us!
Jenny , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started in this industry thanks to my father who was a landscape contractor. I later helped my husband create a successful landscape design business and then decided to “branch out” and create a second business that I could run and operate. My favorite component of the landscape design process is the build phase. Branch Out allows me to execute the vision we create with clients on paper and digital renderings and see them come to life before our eyes. I work wonderfully with the talented and hard working Latinx team who help install our projects. I love working with these guys- they have high standards and work tirelessly six days a week to achieve the results you see on my portfolio page. They have the best attitude, are humble and it brings me joy to attract projects that support their families and enable us to work together.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is still the best source of new clients for us. Instagram is also a growing lead source. We work really hard to ensure our clients have a smooth and seamless process from beginning to end. We complete projects on time and on budget and this leads to happy clients. I have definitely invested in Instagram as well, but nothing beats client referrals.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Growing up in a family of Latino immigrants everyone around me worked very hard and tirelessly. I am proud of my strong work ethic and now I am unlearning the hustle culture and trying to work on balance. Growing a business takes a lot of dedication and passion. I am only one and a half years in and my business is growing and expanding. I just hired my first ever business coach Rick Campos and he is going to help me learn how to set better boundaries with clients and manage employees. It is a dream to be able to hire employees and work with a coach to help take my business to the next level. I am really excited about the future of Branch Out and I look forward to working on being the best version of myself at work and off the clock.
