We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joe Mack. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joe below.
Hi Joe, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I am a photographer doing Real Estate and Music photography along with headshots and lifestyle shoots. I have a completely different business model than most Real Estate photographers. I don’t charge by the square foot as the rest do, I don’t limit the number of photos taken, I offer same-day turnaround, I offer FREE Photoshop for items in the shot that don’t belong, and I offer FREE blue sky when needed. And my prices are better than HALF of what the rest of the photographers in the area charge. I am also a lifelong musician, and for my musician friends that i work with, I keep the rates at rock bottom because I know musicians don’t always have a lot of money. I also include FREE 4k video with a shoot of a performance, and for lifestyle shoots, I offer “pay for 2 hours and get 3 hours of shoot time”.

Joe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I worked for the federal government in the construction field for 39 years, I also had my own construction business for a period of time. But I was always into photography. So when I retired from the Government 7 years ago I decided to give photography a try as a business. LOL it did not go well at first. I did not have the experience or the proper equipment but i learn fast. Bought some new lenses, and a new camera, and the rest is history.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I am heavily into social media as a marketing tool. I have obtained all my clients through Facebook and Instagram. For example, I find someone who sells real estate, send them a friend request, then talk to them about what I do and can do for them showing them my press kit, a graphic of what I offer some samples of my work, then a pricing structure that beats the others by a mile. I do the same for musicians and bands.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have been voted BEST photographer in the Hudson Valley by Chronogram Magazine, I am also a staff photographer at Daryls House a well know music venue owned by Daryl Hall from Hall and Oates. Sharing this with prospective clients is usually the tie-breaker for getting hired by them
