We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marc Cartwright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marc below.
Marc, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that we have the power to create the perspectives which shapes our reality. If you find ways to achieve your goals without relying on the elements you feel may be stopping you, those elements won’t be an obstacle.
I do feel the one thing that will stand in anyone’s way is poor communication. I’ve learned the importance of being upfront with needs and expectations. Never assume or guess another person’s intentions. I value people being direct with me. Part of great communication is being your word and holding others to being theirs. When you operate with integrity, you find fewer and fewer obstacles.

Marc, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always had a love for the entertainment industry. When I was a child, my aunt would take me to the movies almost weekly. The industry seemed so exiting and I wanted to be a part of it anyway I could.
In New York, I first got into acting and worked on commercials, print and smaller theatrical jobs until I graduated from college. Then I moved to Los Angeles and while on sets here, I quickly found myself intrigued by what was going on behind the camera.
I started with photography, photographing actors and then things grew from there. A friend of mine was cast on a big TV show so I could use his photos to approach other celebrities and they would let me take their photos.
After a while, and once digital filmmaking made things more accessible, I decided to go after my true love, film. I took some film classes at UCLA and partnered with a friend to start a production company so we could make films.
The journey was sort of organic. I believe life reflects your choices, so I always make sure to focus my energy on the things that bring me joy. Eventually those things begin to pay and blossom into a career.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes! There is an WONDERFUL organization called S.C.O.R.E., whose mission is to foster vibrant small business communities through mentoring and education.
The program holds classes, they host meetings with business professionals, regulatory officials, and those crucial to the administrative function of business. They have mentors and offer tools that can help any small business get started and flourish. The most amazing thing is that it is all FREE!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Being my own boss and creating a day to day existence that I align with is what drives my creative and business journey.
As fickle as any area of the creative industry can be, I have always found greater opportunity in working for myself and doing what I love.
