We were lucky to catch up with Scarlett Islas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Scarlett, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I’ve taken was leaving my position at SpaceX, where I specialized in Eddy Current Array inspections, to pursue a career as an actress and filmmaker. This decision was deeply personal, spurred by the loss of a partner and a desire for healing. I turned to an acting class, where I rediscovered a passion for storytelling and creative expression. This experience led to the founding of Rebellatrix Anima Productions, through which I aim to empower people by sharing unique and inspiring stories.
The acting class not only helped me heal but also opened my eyes to the beauty of storytelling. I realized that everyone has a universe within them, filled with emotions, experiences, and dreams waiting to be explored. Through stories, we can tap into this inner world and create magic that transcends the ordinary. This realization fueled my commitment to storytelling as a means of connection and transformation.
One of my first major projects was the documentary “Changing Lives – The Acting Class That Changed Her Life,” which highlighted the transformative power of acting. The film received critical acclaim and a bronze Telly Award, validating my decision to pursue this path. This journey has been challenging, requiring me to learn new skills in directing, producing, and acting, but it has also been incredibly rewarding.
Leaving a secure career in aerospace for the uncertain world of filmmaking was a daunting risk. However, it allowed me to align my work with my true passion, turning personal challenges into stories that resonate with others. This journey has been a testament to the power of following one’s heart and the transformative impact of storytelling.

At Rebellatrix Anima Productions, we specialize in both film and commercial work, offering a wide range of services including cinematography, directing, producing, writing, and story structure consultation. Additionally, we provide video editing and photography services. Recently, I had the opportunity to work as a photographer at the WSF World Junior Squash Championships.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A pivotal moment that illustrates my resilience occurred after the loss of my ex-girlfriend. The grief and loss left me feeling directionless and struggling to find hope. In search of healing, I enrolled in an acting class, which became a turning point in my life. Acting allowed me to channel my pain into a creative outlet, helping me reconnect with my inner spark and find purpose again.
The experience was transformative, not only reigniting my passion for acting but also inspiring me to explore storytelling as a director and cinematographer. This journey taught me to use pain as fuel to create meaningful stories, transforming personal struggles into powerful narratives that can inspire and connect with others.
Through Rebellatrix Anima Productions, I now bring these stories to life, using my experiences to guide and shape each project. This journey has been a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of finding purpose in adversity. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is a spark within each of us waiting to be reignited.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fueled by a mission to inspire and uplift others by helping them explore and express their true selves. I aim to challenge the notion of the “starving artist” by promoting a vision of abundance and support within the artistic community. My goal is to create a space where everyone can freely express themselves without fear of judgment, regardless of their background or access to resources. By providing tools and opportunities, I strive to help others transform their pain into beauty and hope, reminding them that creativity can be a powerful force for healing and change.
I believe that by sharing authentic stories and encouraging open expression, we can build a more compassionate and understanding world. My work is not just about creating art; it’s about building a community that celebrates diversity, fosters growth, and empowers individuals to find their voice and share their stories.
