We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shazett Bullard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shazett below.
Shazett, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
In the beginning I was focused on mastering a delicious Key Lime cake recipe. Once I mastered the recipe, I would go to different businesses or people I knew and gift them a cake for an event or just because. Well it took off fast! I booked my first cake for a family holiday dinner. Everyone raved about the taste and texture. Long story short I became their family cake lady. My first client trusted me to be creative with designs as I created cakes for baby showers and birthdays. I took pictures of everything even the not so pretty cakes. I was building my portfolio and half of my portfolio is filled with pictures from my first client’s family. I’m forever grateful to them.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My legal name is Shazett Bullard owner of Sweet&Sophisticated. My cupcakes (clients) call me “Shae”. My love for baking came from me watching and helping my grandmother at an early age cooking and baking for her family & friends. She loved to see people enjoying her food. At the age of 14, my love for baking began to flourish. I prepared cakes, cupcakes and other pastries that my family & friends LOVED!! As I improved my recipes and self taught decorating skills, my PASSION for becoming not just a baker but a cake artist became my motivation to start Sweet & Sophisticated. I love baking and designing cakes because it allows me to express my artistic side. I’m a licensed private baker located in Eatonton, GA that serve by APPOINTMENT ONLY. My services primarily stretch from Eatonton, GA and Georgia’s Lake Counties to Atlanta, GA and it’s surrounding counties.
Over the years I have met several people and my sweets became part of there family memories! I enjoy sharing with people my passion!! My hopes are to continue to touch people with my Sweets with a Sophisticated style & flavor that makes them say
Ooh La La in every bite………

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The main thing I had to unlearn was the habit of being pleasing to everyone because I thought this would help advance my business to success. WRONG! The backstory on that is I used to bend on price, trying to be competitive when what I was up against was not even in comparison to my skill and talent. This left me in the negative year after year. Another issue I had was breaking my own policy on payment deadlines and pickups. Often I would find myself having to do rush orders on supplies and hoping it arrives on time. Wasted time on late order pickups which cause a delay in me arriving to my next stop. Biggest lesson learned after unlearning the habit decisions is …. Everyone will not be your client; be consistent and stand firm on your prices and policies!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I learned how resilient I was during 2020 when COVID shut most businesses down. It was a very trying time. Calling and emailing clients to cancel wedding cakes, birthdays and baby shower cake for months out. Having to pay out of my personal account to refund clients money. When things slowly opened back up; supply and demand did not recover fast enough to meet all of my needs. In the beginning I couldn’t see past what was right I’m front of me. After two weeks in, I decided to focus on revamping policies, taking the much need mental break and continued to promote my business during quarantine. Getting my clients excited about 2021. The much needed time allowed me to prepare for 2021 which was a challenging year because I had 2020 rescheduled events on top of my new 2021 events. ALL of my loyal clients returned; along with a few new clients. People were ready to celebrate!! I’m so thankful. Instead of giving up, I took the time to plan, prepare, reflect and regroup. Sweet&Sophisticated came out of Covid lockdown standing without needing any loans or government assistance. I do not take that for granted because many businesses in my area did not recover.
