We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Swooty Mac a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Swooty, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Being patient with my creative process, studying my peers as well as the artists that inspired me growing up. Just trying new things, taking creative risk. A lot of times you don’t really learn til you mess something up. Being able to appreciate and learn from the failures make the end result that much better for me. Honestly the biggest obstacle for me as a creative is working a regular 9-5 job. Haha this shit trash really but we got responsibilities, bills to pay, kids to help raise.. and studio time ain’t free. Music videos ain’t free. It costs a lot physically, financially and emotionally. But it’s worth the end result.

Swooty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a dad. I’m a rapper. I’m learning to produce. I paint. I’m a man of many talents. I wear a lot of different hats. I’m not sure what sets me apart from anyone else. Not to say I’m not special at all but that’s for the people to decide. I’m just ME. Flaws and all. Progress is a process. But I’m just me. I take pride in that. I care about my work and I care about my people. Everything after that is extra.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Personally the most rewarding part is impact.. big or small. If one of my songs can make you feel good, make you cry or just feel anything, then I did my job. I don’t care if I inspired you to go jump in the studio yourself or if you just got me on your playlist while you clean the house. I did my job.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
People don’t always understand or even care to understand the sacrifices that are made to chase a dream. The money spent, the sleep lost, the meals that get missed. Especially when the pieces are moving how you want them to. We all gon eat. Without a doubt, I am going to eat. But I mean, if they don’t get it I can’t force them. And we all gotta come to peace with that. They’ll see it or they won’t. So from a creative perspective, keep going..
