Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Beth Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Beth thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was in high school I auditioned for my first musical and really started to take music more seriously. My father was in a band for most of my life and I didn’t play an instrument yet, but I remember deciding I wanted music to be involved in whatever I was going to do for the rest of my life. There was also a surge in popularity of the female singer-songwriter at the time that made it seem like that life wasn’t a complete pipe dream.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got started in music by writing songs and playing them live at open mics in Austin during college. Although my main passion began with singing and performing, I quickly took to writing and my performances usually center around my original material. I’m about to release my 5th album of original songs since I recorded my first back in 2008. And although my music has always been roots -based, it has definitely come to include many other genres over the years, from country, blues, soul, indie, and nineties alternative to good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is when someone finally gets you, either your message or what you’re going for musically. It’s when someone relates to what you’re saying and is emotionally affected by the music.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There’s so many. I’ve been told no way more times than I’ve been told yes. I’ve received a few scathing reviews and I’ve been fired for being “too depressing” or not invited back to gigs because I was not the “right fit”. It’s impossible to survive in this business without a thick skin.
