We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nour El Ain Najar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nour El Ain below.
Nour El Ain, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Art is my refuge, a world where I can truly be myself and think freely. It’s in this space that I shed layers and faces, focusing on my self-improvement. If I had to choose a job that brings me joy, it would undoubtedly be being an artist. Yet, the reality in Tunisia is more complex. Our artistic community is vibrant but not officially recognized by the state. Tunisia has great potential, but we need more support to make the arts a viable livelihood. I hope for a future where artists and the country work together to bring this vision to life. (Speaking on flied)

Nour El Ain, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an emerging artist from the village of Guelala in Djerba, balancing the traditions of my home with the vibrant urban life in Tunis, where I study architecture. My conservative upbringing deeply influences my art, which I express through collage, photo editing, watercolor painting, sketching, and pottery. My work is a unique blend of Guelala’s rich traditions and the contemporary life of Tunis.
My art addresses identity and cultural heritage, offering a fresh perspective on Tunisian life. What sets me apart is this fusion of influences and the ability to tell deep, personal stories through my creations.
I’m most proud of staying true to my roots while exploring new artistic paths. I want clients, followers, and fans to know that my work is a heartfelt expression of my journey and my community’s stories, aiming to create connections that transcend cultural and geographical boundaries.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Growing up in the village of Guelala in Djerba, where the whispers of tradition linger in the clay, I was deeply influenced by the rich heritage of pottery. The art of molding clay, passed down through generations, called to me with its tactile and creative allure. Yet, as fate would have it, I found myself balancing this age-old craft with my studies in architecture amidst the bustling tapestry of Tunis.
Tunis, with its swift urban rhythms, was a world apart from the serene embrace of my village. Initially, the contrast felt overwhelming, like a dream half-formed. But soon, I saw a chance to weave my heritage with contemporary threads. I began to dance with various art forms, watercolor painting, and sketching, each stroke infused with the essence of my village’s traditions.
One of my most challenging yet rewarding endeavors was a series of collages and photo edits. I took photographs of traditional pottery and village life, superimposing them with images from my urban sojourns. This alchemy of old and new, tradition and modernity, became my bridge between roots and the present.
In this journey, music became a potent muse. At a wedding in Djerba, the instrumental melodies wove a spell around me. Inspired, I began to superimpose videos from that magical day with the music, creating art pieces that resonated deeply with my personal and cultural tapestry.
The path was strewn with challenges. Balancing my architecture studies with my artistic passion required immense discipline and resilience. There were times when my visions faltered, but each attempt was a step forward. I experimented with unique techniques, like using a small piece of mirror to reflect blue light, which in turn reflected water and dancing fragments, adding a layer of dreamlike complexity to my art.
Through it all, I found my sanctuary in creation. Art became the realm where I could be wholly myself, a place of boundless freedom. It nurtured my soul and brought me unparalleled joy. Despite the shadows of official recognition for the arts in Tunisia, I remain steadfast in my craft, perpetually balancing tradition with modernity, and pushing the boundaries of my creativity.
This journey has taught me the beauty of resilience, the magic of embracing one’s roots while exploring new horizons, and the infinite possibilities that arise from blending diverse art forms and experiences.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my view, society can best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem by providing accessible funding and grants to alleviate financial instability, and by establishing affordable or free studio spaces, galleries, and workshops for creation and collaboration. Investing in arts education at all levels and offering workshops, mentorship programs, and residencies can help artists develop their skills and expand their networks. Recognizing and celebrating artistic achievements through awards, exhibitions, and public art projects can highlight the contributions of artists to society. Integrating art into urban planning and development, such as public art installations and cultural districts, can enhance cultural vibrancy. Developing cultural policies that prioritize the arts, protect intellectual property rights, and promote fair compensation and cultural diversity is essential. Encouraging community engagement and participation in cultural events can foster a culture of appreciation for the arts. Promoting collaboration between artists, businesses, and institutions can provide new opportunities and resources, while utilizing digital platforms can help artists reach a global audience. Additionally, recognizing the unique challenges faced by artists and providing mental health support and resources can create a supportive environment where artists can thrive both mentally and emotionally. By taking these steps, society can create a nurturing environment where artists and creatives can flourish, contributing to a rich and dynamic cultural landscape.
