We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa Grisolia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa below.
Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I previously worked in finance, specifically processing and underwriting mortgages. At the time, makeup was a side job that I was doing for people I knew. One day I was having a terrible day at work, it was a high pressure atmosphere and yelling was considered normal at the time from superiors and I had an epiphany. This was when I decided I really wanted to try to do makeup for a living, so I signed up for makeup classes. Some people did not understand why I would leave a stable job to try to do this. To me it was as easy as it is now, I love what I do. I love the emotion that comes along with making people feel good about the way they look. I have also done horror and love that I am able to get a different type of emotion, maybe the shock factor, it is fun, it has always really been fun.

Lisa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started a little backwards, I went to makeup school first. I met Debra Macki back in 2001-2002 and did an intense makeup course through her program. From there I was on her team doing the Miss Massachusetts USA Pageants where I was lucky enough to do Miss Massachusetts Makeup that year when she was giving away her crown. This gave me a little traction and weddings were my next step. I decided I really should know skin and enrolled in school to become an Esthetician and fell in love with skincare so much that I became an Instructor. I do really love teaching and helping others learn. I am most proud of helping people whether it be helping them feel confident through makeup or skin health, I do believe that is why I love my job.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In the beginning I thought everyone wanted to wear a lot of makeup. I had to really take a step back and communicate with my clients. When you do a service for someone like makeup or hairstyling you really have to listen, you are trying to create their vision.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me I love seeing the look on clients faces either when they see themselves for the first time or when they see their photos if it is a photoshoot. Nothing better than someone feeling great about what was created together, I really love when clients trust me and the collaboration with other creatives is an amazing one!
