We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daniel Weiner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
YouShouldTalkTo is a product of Covid and I joke that I was unknowingly building this business my entire life. After Covid hit, the agency I was leading sales for was decimated. After taking some time off, interviewing, and wanting to get out of the rat race, I decided ‘if not now, when?’.
I didn’t 100% know I had the entrepreneurial spirit until I got started. Something woke up inside of me. I felt and still feel like, I found my calling. My life’s work and purpose. I wish I had started earlier largely because I feel I had wasted some of my potential working for someone else.
Regardless, the things I’ve learned along the way, and the experiences I’ve had prior to starting YouShouldTalkTo are what make me who I am, and make my business a successful one, and I wouldn’t change those for the world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
YouShouldTalkTo pairs brands/marketers (for free) with vetted agencies and/or freelancers for marketing and tech needs. We save marketing leaders, generally CMO’s, VP’s and Directors, and incredible amount of time and energy and act as a free resource before, during, and after the agency search process.
We take calls with marketing leaders — where we talk through needs, timeline, and budget. Generally, shortly after that meeting, 3-5 highly relevant introductions to agencies and/or. freelancers are made. Once we make the intro’s we are out of the actual sales process, however, we turn into an objective soundboard for the brand as much or as little as is helpful.
We are often writing or editing RFP’s or just advising on the process in general, free to the brand. We work with roughly 250 agencies and 150 freelancers/consultants. Both of those lists are always expanding and contracting as we meet new great partners OR remove existing partners from consideration.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Just starting and being ruthlessly consistent. I have posted virtually every single day, for the past 4 years, on Linkedin. It hs been an exceptional tool in my content arsenal and a wonderful creative outlet for me. I host a podcast where I interview CMO’s and VP’s about their unpopular marketing opinions, thoughts on agencies, and much more.
Consistency and stubbornness plus a little authenticity and creativity has been my recipe for success.
Advice for others looking to start would be to commit to the next 30 days. Just start posting. Literally anything. Building the muscle and the habit is such an important first step.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Hosting a podcast and private dinners. Both invite only. Both have been fantastic for fostering existing relationships and creative new ones.
