We were lucky to catch up with Sarain Robbins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sarain thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
To provide a little backstory; I have always loved the arts since elementary school so it wasn’t a surprise to myself or anyone in my family that I’d wanted to attend an art institution. I’d transferred from Savannah Technical College (studying business management) to the Savannah College of Art & Design (studying motion media design) in late 2020 with hopeful expectations. However, I didn’t expect for my first year at SCAD to challenge my creativity. Experiencing creator’s block caused me to question my own ability to develop and execute creative concepts. In late 2021, during the middle of my sophomore year, I randomly attended a bible study at my grandmother’s church… and was pleasantly surprised by the teachings. After previously not being in church for years, I’d found myself back in church — which was one of the best decisions because it led me to a true revelation of Jesus Christ that I’d never had before. My new revelation of Christ had completely shifted the remaining course of my journey at SCAD. It re-lit the fire that I felt had been snuffed out by creator’s block because I finally felt a sense of purpose in why I have the gift of creativity and beyond that — a bigger reason for being at SCAD. Through my new found salvation in Jesus Christ, my heart became open to the idea of sharing His good news in my projects. Making my projects about Jesus brought the most fulfillment out of my entire college experience!
My most meaningful project has been my senior project. It is a short film titled ‘Tell Me More’ — a true story that reveals a cinematic perspective of my relationship with Jesus through raw emotion and vulnerability about a specific struggle. This project holds so much meaning because I was able to share a part of my life that my peers don’t get to see behind closed doors. It’s always been important to me that I open up and share a deeper, more relatable side of what it’s like to be in closeness with GOD through Jesus. To show my peers that Jesus is not at all about religion — but genuine relationship, vulnerability and a surrendered heart was truly what inspired the concept of this piece. Religion could never make us feel the love of GOD but I believe from my own personal experience that having an authentic relationship with Christ that is rooted in the word of GOD. This project’s concept was intentional down to every major and minor detail by the use of subliminal imagery, language, color, sound, location and props. Tell Me More is hands down my favorite piece by far.

Sarain, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Sarain Robbins and I’m from the sprawling city of Savannah, GA. I am the youngest and only daughter of both of my parents. Growing up, my mother has always described me as an ‘animated’ individual. Throughout my childhood, I’ve found myself reciting and performing my favorite songs, tv shows and commercials. In 2019, I started a Youtube channel, doing storytimes, girl talks and hair tutorials. I’d always thought that I would be on the big screen because my personality is so animated. Turns out, I actually prefer being behind the screen, as a designer and animator. My unexpected interest in editing my Youtube videos and creating my intros has overtime led me to motion design. Now, rather than telling stories verbally, I create stories visually. I have received my bachelor of fine arts degree in motion media design at the Savannah College of Art & Design. I desire to connect with others which is why as a motion designer, I aim to create content that is informative, inspiring and/or entertaining and ultimately points towards Jesus. I’m able to accomplish this by allowing life to navigate my visual storytelling through 2d graphic design and live action. Not only am I a motion designer but I also enjoy recording voice-overs, which I’ve incorporated in many of my student projects. Throughout my time in college, I’ve explored working with a blend of typography, photography and live action so majority of my portfolio entails those 3 elements. Since graduation, I am open to further expand my portfolio by creating impactful motion or graphic design content that explores typography, photography and/or live action, containing impactful and positive concepts.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the fact that I know what the root of what I’m creating holds the keys to eternal life. This life as we know it is temporary. My reason for creating is simple and my reason is Jesus. I desperately desire for the world to know and love Jesus because there is no greater love than the love that is found in Him. It’s rewarding for me to create content that I believe will have a powerful impact on souls. In such an evil world, designing/creating content is the vehicle that I use to drive the much needed love of Jesus in the world around me!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A hard lesson that I had to unlearn is that I am not in control of every decision, even as a creator. Art is a form of communication so it’s important that I stay connected to Jesus, who gives me messages to communicate in my work. GOD is the original creator and the creative concepts that I have, first come from Him. With my goal of inspiring, GOD’s presence is important to me because the greatest impact follows His presence! So, learning to release control and consult with GOD about my ideas and concepts has been a huge but necessary adjustment in such a sacred space — the arts.
