We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Grant Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Grant, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
In April of 2024, my organization, St. Martin’s Chamber Choir, collaborated with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra and Columbine High School Silver Choir to perform a 25 Year Remembrance concert at Columbine High School. It’s hard to believe that the tragedy of the Columbine shooting took place that long ago. We were honored to perform at the high school and to be joined by so many young performers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a professional violinist and orchestra librarian by training. I previously worked with the Phoenix and Pittsburgh symphonies, and have worked with many of the top orchestras in the country. Two years ago, I transitioned into arts administration work when I became the Executive Director of St. Martin’s Chamber Choir. I find it very rewarding to be able to guide my organization forward.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The most important thing people can do is go attend concerts! Whether it’s the major orchestra in your city or a small regional choir, go out and watch performances. The reason musicians perform is to share music with you, the audience members.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s very rewarding to be able to bring music to people for a living. I find it particularly rewarding to bring music to young people. My choir goes into many schools ranging from elementary to college to help teach our next generation of musicians.
