Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nobodi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nobodi, appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
At Berklee College of Music, where I majored in songwriting with a focus on voice, I faced significant challenges navigating my performance skills due to my raspy voice. I was born with vocal nodules, which made my voice raspy throughout my childhood. My private voice instructor, Marcelle Gauvin, was incredibly encouraging and recognized my struggle. It wasn’t until she suggested speech therapy that my voice began to recover by my sophomore year. Marcelle continued to work with my through my senior year of college.
Despite my improvements, I received conflicting feedback from my instructors. Songwriting and lyric teachers would tell me, “You can sing the phone book, but your writing needs work.” Conversely, my singing teachers appreciated my unique songwriting but believed my voice wasn’t where it needed to be. This hindered me from getting certain singing opportunities at the school. Although these teachers had the best intentions for my career, this conflicting feedback made me realize a fundamental truth of being an artist: You can’t please everybody.
Rick Rubin said it best, “The best art divides the audience.” Feeling misunderstood as an artist and songwriter was challenging, especially at such a prestigious school. But as I’ve grown and released my own music, I’ve learned to embrace what makes me different, even if some see them as flaws. Over the years, I’ve gained incredible fans who love the way I write and perform. My unique writing style and my raspy voice has gotten the attention of thousands on social media platforms. Their support inspires me to be unapologetically myself, and through that authenticity, I create my best work.

Nobodi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an independent alt-pop artist and songwriter originally from Northern New Jersey, now based in Los Angeles. I found the voice of “nobodi” during the pandemic and never looked back. The name is inspired by a quote from my favorite spiritual leader and author, Ram Dass: “The game is not about becoming somebody, it’s about becoming nobody.” In the journey of life, becoming nobody is about freeing yourself from the narratives imposed by others and the ones you create for yourself. By becoming nobody, we’re able to connect on a deeper level with each other and see ourselves as the same.
My music delves into the challenges of growing up, battling self-doubt, mental health struggles, and societal pressures. I strive to create a musical expression of both trauma and triumph, offering a raw and honest exploration of inner contemplation through spiritual learning. Through my songs, I hope to create a space where my listeners can feel completely vulnerable and understood.
In 2022, I released my first single, “The Method,” which addresses the toxic side of the self-help market. Since then, I’ve been overwhelmed by the support and love from my fans. In 2023, I released my second single, “Anxious,” and my third, “Razors.” “Anxious” dives deep into my psyche and personifies the debilitating nature of anxiety disorder, while “Razors” touches on themes of an abusive relationship. My latest single, “Ok With That,” speaks on the spiritual growth that occurs when you stop clinging and just let go. Thanks to incredible support, I’ve reached over half a million streams on all platforms in just my first year of making music. This journey is just beginning, and I’m so grateful for the support I’ve gained along the way.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I started focusing on my social media presence about two years ago, and since then, my TikTok account has reached 11.4K followers and counting! Social media is really about throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. Some people follow trends or promote things other than their music to gain more followers and views. I wanted to ensure that anyone who followed me did so because they resonated with my music.
Managing social media is a full-time job, especially when you’re handling most of it alone. It’s all about consistency and having fun with it! I always think to myself, “What would make me stop scrolling?” Sometimes it’s a cool hook line, a camera shake, or just a good quality video with great lighting that grabs people’s attention. Fortunately, combining these elements with well-produced and mixed music has helped me grow my social media presence.
My advice for those looking to start is to just start and try not to be too precious about it. That was a big struggle for me in the beginning—I wanted everything to be perfect before posting. However, what resonates with people is a more authentic, imperfect approach. It’s really about going for it and then keeping up with it. Be unapologetically yourself, and your true fans will find you.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission for my music is to create a community of like-minded individuals looking to live life more consciously. I want my listeners to know that I see myself in them, and I hope they see themselves in me. We are more alike than we are different, especially when it comes to each of our journeys through life. My ideal fan is a misfit who feels misunderstood and is always asking the deeper questions. If I can create a community of people like that, willing to be different to challenge the status quo, people on a spiritual journey, then I’ll know my music did its job. It’s never just about a song; it’s about the difference a song can make or the movement it could begin.
