We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Dean a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris , thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
So the first dollar I ever made from my music was back in 2015 i believe. I had been working with small time artists with little to no budget at the time. One day i received a message on Instagram from a guy who was putting together beats and music for some of his artists. He heard a few of my beats online and wanted 3 of them. I was able to work on a pretty fair deal for him that worked for us both. Once that money hit my account it showed me that it is possible to supplement your income on the music you create. It was a great feeling and ill always remember it.
Chris , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So my story has a few twists and turns. I began playing music in 2001 when I purchased a bass guitar by accident thinking it was an electric guitar. I had no friends in music and no knowledge at all but I loved the band Slipknot and i wanted to play tough riffs just like they did. The next year i got my first guitar for my birthday and started to teach myself old Metallica songs. Once i got kinda good at guitar i formed a band with one of my closest friends Fernando Castro who now sings in Las Vegas for the Legends in Concert show. We made some rather interesting music, won a battle of the bands show and made great memories while doing so. Eventually I wanted to focus more on production and beats as HipHop was always a big part of the music i listened too. One of my good friends gave me this program called Fruity Loops. I took hours and hours trying to learn to make a simple pattern but I never gave up. Fast forward years later I got really good at production and making beats. I started to work with local rappers and artists. I sold beats also whenever the opportunity came. Over the years Ive come to work with a bunch of different artist in and out of Miami. In 2021, I worked on a RNB album titled ” Up close and Personal” with the legendary MiamiBeatWave which hit #2 on the Itunes RNB charts. That was fun! My journey in music has been a strange one but everyday i get up and find the motivation I need to make bangers. This year (2022) Ive already released two songs with an amazing talent in David Correy and we plan on dropping a ton more music this year. I’m also taking on new projects so I’m always making time for upcoming artists and anyone looking to add quality production to their project.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has always been the same. Make good music!! I always believe that if the music is good everything else will fall into place. Its worked for me so far.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Honestly I still get hyped when I see a song I produced helping others. Reading a comment that a random person writes about a song i worked on and how it helped them through a part of their journey in life is always rewarding. The facts that a beat i made in my bedroom touched someone on the other side of the world is crazy to me. It never gets old.
