We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexandria Medina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexandria , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission behind photography and doula work is to create life long memories that are forever paused in time. To capture growing families, their lives unposed and what family is. The authenticity of each family and their unique lives as they live. I want each family to leave their session knowing they had fun and enjoyed each moment captured! As a doula I want to help support, advocate and love each patient as needed through their pregnancies and postpartum journey!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my photography business as a hobby at first. I loved the idea of capturing families, and creating their memories! I have spent countless hours learning, educating and creating a brand that is unique to myself. I became a doula to help women through their labor, birth and postpartum journey! Within the last year I created a brand that guides families to help style them for their sessions, learned to better advocate for clients who book me as a doula and support each client and their special needs!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In this last year, I lost my cousin due to postpartum complications and had to walk thorough trails of watching her fight to live and then loose her battle, to learn to walk through healing to get back to a place of wanting to capture family’s and even do doula work again. I have found my way back to learning to truly love the work I do and honor my cousin in the way she’d want me too.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When I make the pivot to a more lifestyle, natural photographer. I had to learn to use things I never used before. Learn to go with the flow, not pose as much and just allow families to be themselves in the moment! To let their babies run, laugh, snuggle and be themselves and to not feel pressured to be perfect!
