We were lucky to catch up with Macky Mindel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Macky, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I actually always knew I needed to lean into my creative side. Rather than wishing I started sooner, I’ve been figuring out how exactly I am to do so; A process that always feels like it could be sped up. I started my creative career professionally as a first-year out of college in the Interior Design/Architecture world working in large firms. I eventually departed fully into the world of fitness to focus on my social media accounts to funnel my creativity. I found that working for someone else in the creative world in such a capacity gave me less control over my ideas than I had wanted. While I am grateful for the lessons I learned in the industry, I do wish I had decided to focus on my personal growth sooner. That being said, there is always room for what-ifs and if only, so I don’t like to dwell on it too much. Do I think there would’ve been benefits to tapping into this world sooner? Sure. However, I know that there is room for everyone to create their realities and it is never too late to start.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Getting into the social media marketing/influencing world and entrepreneurship has been a slow, yet organic process for me. When Instagram came out, or at least, when it gained popularity, I was in high school. I was of the age of individuals who grew up with social media and the internet, navigating everyone’s opinions and views on it. When I made my Instagram account, it was private, and I followed only people I knew. Even then I was posting my outfit of the day, every day. I always had a camera, an interest in photography, in fashion, in interiors, you name it. Anything I could visualize and/or express with, my brain went wild. I studied interior design in college, graduating with a BS in Interior Architecture then started in on my career full-time. That is until 2023, when I left Interior Design and started working in boutique fitness, something I always considered a hobby. This departure allowed me to channel my creative energy to myself while working in a field I simply enjoyed. Throughout the years post-college until now, I began sharing more of the photos I had stored and not posted due to feeling like I couldn’t “over post”; like I’d be annoying to my followers (primarily of people who knew me or knew of me). The first step in creating my own world on social media was getting over this. Once that happened, I did lose some followers, but I gained so many more. I also started having conversations with people I had no idea cared about what I shared, but they did. People were interested. This flipped a switch for me, and I started learning more and more about the social media marketing/influencing world. The learning process has been slow but steady and so many doors have opened up along the way! I currently work in fitness but accept collaborations through Instagram. I also offer my services in shooting, charging hourly, which extends into wedding day content creation, where I offer different packages. My eye to find and capture beauty is a part of me I can’t turn off. So, naturally, I will continue down this path of building a future working for myself in a creative capacity, wherever that may lead me.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Be interested! Ask questions about topics you know nothing about. Tell people they fascinate you, even if it’s beyond your comprehension. Let creatives know that their mind is reaching you because it fuels them to know their vision can make real impacts. Empowerment will make the whole world better, one creative at a time.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Of course there are things non-creatives will not understand about a creative’s journey. I think the subjective nature of the creative world makes most of it hard to understand for the practically-minded individuals to be honest. But that is ok. People are different and our minds work differently. I don’t need everyone to understand me, because it is impossible for everyone to. But at the least, I wish everyone was ok with that fact and could accept that others can and do see the world differently than they do, and maybe even be a little curious.
