We recently connected with Joe Bizelli and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned how to write songs from reading every book I could find on songwriting, watching countless interviews with famous writers I admire, and by writing a bunch of bad songs. To be completely honest, at this point in my life I’ve written hundreds of songs and sometimes they still turn out bad.
I also looked online for songwriting groups in my area and discovered that NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) had monthly meetings in my city. I met a very nice lady named Donna Opfer who was the chapter president at that time. She was kind enough to take me under her wing and taught me the basics of songwriting. Donna also encouraged me to move to Nashville which was pivotal in my writing career.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The Home Warranty company I co-founded is called Certified Home Warranties. Our policies cover the cost of home repairs such as problems with plumbing, electrical system and appliances. For example, if the customer’s AC unit goes out and the cost to repair it is $2,000, the policy holder would only pay their $100 deductible for that repair. A lot of people nowadays are on tight budgets and it can be difficult to afford unexpected repairs and our coverage offers a solution to that problem.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The first time we had to pivot with the company was when we discovered the cost of mailing advertisements was quite a bit more than we expected, especially after the pandemic. What we ended up doing was partnering with another Home Warranty company that was already sending out more mail than they could handle. We end up making slightly less per deal, but not nearly as much as we were spending on the mail.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a songwriter is the feeling you get when someone approaches you after a performance and tells you that one of your songs deeply affected them. It can be for a multiple reasons such as reminding them of a loved one that has passed away, re-living one of their past memories, etc. This might sound strange, but I feel like I did my job on a song when it makes someone cry.
