We were lucky to catch up with Schynell Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Schynell, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
This is my opinion on how I would move more quickly if I was to start over or if I could do it all over again. If I’m 100% honest, I wouldn’t do anything different than I did this time other than less procrastination. The reason I say that is because everything I’ve been through, everything I’ve experienced, all the people I’ve worked with, have all added to my growth and experiences so I could learn the lessons needed for me to be where I’m at today. I’ve realize that all of these things have brought me to the point I am at today. If I wouldn’t have went through the different jobs, businesses, bad deals, etc, I might not be doing what I’m doing right now. So in closing, I say I would not change anything to speed it up because I realize that we are always where we need to be at the point we need to be. Other than that, I would say be fearless and Just Do It.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I wear a lot of different hats in business, but my company is Sparks of Allure, Inc. Sparks of Allure is a production company. I am currently focused on producing documentaries and tv series. I offer video and production services for tv series, interviews, events, documentaries and I am moving into film. I am the host of a talk show called, “The Prescription,” that is in partnership with MyCITI radio. The Prescription started out as a podcast in November of 2022 and has grown to a talk show as of February of this year. The Prescription is about sharing: What is your prescription to success, so that we can help each grow, elevate and learn on our own journeys. I converse with anyone who has achieved some level of their own success and wants to share their walk, their experiences and their journey with others. Goddess Thoughts is a podcast that started randomly with me just recording the random things that go thru my head. I started to structure it more over time, but it is just talking about day to day things that I share and also messages I feel I need to deliver. I unknowingly became an event curator and promoter last year when I started the live version of my music showcase series called, “Artistry on the Flow.” This is the first project I began under my production company back in December of 2022. The series is 3 episodes, two shot in Jacksonville, Fl and one shot in Atlanta, Ga. It highlights emerging and rising local talent performing video style with interviews. Last year, I hosted my first live music showcase and have been curating events since. I have a few new projects I am working on, including in based in Southeast Georgia. I feel I am my brand, my company, my shows, etc. I am The Hidden Lovr, the personality, as well as, Schynell Walker, the businesswoman. I feel that what I offer the most is authenticity. I provide platforms for people to be themselves, for them to shine, for them to be who they are off the stage and on. Everything I do tries into the arts and entertainment industry and I feel that the culture that has been cultivated needs to be changed. I feel that everyone can have the opportunity to be themselves and find them and bring that to the world, provide events for musicians to perform and get paid when they don’t have a large fanbase or following instead of charging them to perform. I share my walk and experiences as a host, poet and in what I create to spark in others inspiration, ideas, growth, etc. hence the name of my company, Sparks of Allure. I send out sparks of love and light to all.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn and teach myself is mindset. When I started my first business I was operating in a mindset as a worker. Even though I had become an entrepreneur and boss, I wasn’t looking at my business from that of a CEO. I had to first change my financial mindset to a better budget, reinvest and manage better. Then I had to change my mindset on growth and expansion. I had to stop thinking so small and understand that I had to dream bigger and envision my business as international and start thinking and moving out side the box and operate in the clouds. lastly, I had to understand that my first customers and those who would support what I do are complete strangers. For me, I traditionally thought that friends and family would support my vision and dreams but I came to under that when you start a business those closest to you do not see you as a CEO or boss. Your still looked at as the person you have always been. They are there more for moral support but your support in purchasing and buying into your business is going to be people who don’t know you but want you’re product or service.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
This is a story that happed this year. I had to pivot in the manner in which I was approaching people who I work with at my production company. I had become so discouraged because I thought that working with certain individuals and sectors who garner support and when it didn’t I almost quit. In that point, I received so great advice from a friend that told me not to quit but to start looking at the situation from a different angle. So I took so time off strategize and regroup. Instead of not quitting I decided to place myself in different circles and network with more like minded individuals who have common goals and focus instead of forcing what I do to fit or mold to those who do not have the same vision and goals that I do.
