We were lucky to catch up with Allyson Blankenburg Family & wedding photographer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Allyson Blankenburg, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I started my business in 2018 and I wish I had done it 10 years before, at minimum. I always knew I loved photography but never had the courage or the skill to start a business. Then I started having babies and it was just a hobby at that point. I didn’t become serious about using photography as my business/income until 2018 and by that time, I had wasted an entire decade of what I could have been building. Although I feel like things happen for a reason and God has a greater plan, so I know it’s meant to be this way. If I had started earlier, I may have missed many special moments with my babies or not had the wherewithal to run a business appropriately. So it all works out how it’s supposed to!
Allyson Blankenburg, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I offer photography services focused on families (including maternity and newborn as well) and wedding photography. One of my passions is Destination weddings because traveling is one of my favorite things to do in the world.
I think what sets me apart from the rest is the experience you get with me. My clients become my friends and my friends become my family. If you don’t want a long term relationship with me, I’m probably not your girl haha! I love making people feel special and beautiful and connect with their people. And then showcasing that in their photos.
I am proud of myself for starting a business from the ground up, without knowing anything of what to do. I am a creative person first, so the business side can be challenging. But I have really invested in myself each year to grow and learn and I plan to continue doing that until I eventually retire. An old dog can always learn a New trick!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
With me, what you see is what you get. I am very real and transparent with my clients, friends, and family. If I feel like I am not the photographer for you, I will kindly let you know because I don’t want you to be disappointed in my work or the experience I provide.
The great thing is that my clients love this and appreciate it! They keep coming back for more and tell their friends about me. And I’m so thankful for it. I also sometimes leave them with an embarrassing story they may get to tell (like when I fell off a chair while photographing a wedding dress)
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The fact that I get to set my own standards, goals, and rules is the most rewarding aspect of being a creative. I do not refuel my soul by showing up to a 9-5 everyday. I do it by serving others through photography for the generations to come. It brings me true joy to be able to leave my clients with lasting precious memories
