We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alaina Joy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alaina below.
Alaina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
My artistic journey began in childhood, where a natural inclination for creativity eclipsed my academic interests. However, the demands of adult life intervened, forcing me to temporarily abandon my passion for painting in pursuit of higher education and a traditional career.
The isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic reignited my artistic spirit. Escaping the confines of my home through painting, I soon felt compelled to share my work with the world. An Instagram account became a platform for showcasing my creations and connecting with fellow artists. It was there that I discovered the inspiring work of DecoPopZ.
Driven by admiration for his talent, I reached out to him. Our connection quickly became a friendship and more often a mentorship as he generously shared his knowledge and experiences. His unwavering support and guidance were instrumental in the early stages of my artistic career.
Feeling overwhelmed and disillusioned after a particularly challenging art market, I confided in him about considering giving up entirely. His encouragement to participate in a professional art show was a pivotal moment. With his support, I joined him as an exhibitor at the Lost in Noise show, an experience that marked a turning point.
Thanks to his belief in my abilities, I have transformed from a hobbyist into a professional artist. My work is now regularly featured in galleries, and I actively participate in monthly exhibitions. The culmination of this journey is my co-ownership of JAMM Gallery in New Jersey.

Alaina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Alaina Joy, the artist behind Painted Thingies and one of the driving forces behind JAMM Gallery where I act as the Director of Visual Arts and work alongside an incredible collaborative team. My world has always revolved around color, creativity, and connection. Growing up, I was that kid with paint-splattered clothes and walls covered in doodles. Art was my escape, my language, and my passion.
I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I started painting again during the pandemic ans showing my work that I realized the impact my art had on others and decided to turn it into a career. Painted Thingies was born out of a desire to share my vibrant world with others. My pieces are a fusion of pop art and street culture, with a heavy dose of inclusivity. I believe art should be accessible to everyone, and my work reflects that belief.
JAMM Gallery is the next step in my journey. It’s more than just a space to showcase art; it’s a platform for fostering community and dialogue. I wanted to create a place where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their background or artistic ability. We’re committed to showcasing diverse voices and using art as a tool for positive change.
Through Painted Thingies and JAMM Gallery, I aim to inspire, provoke thought, and create a space where people can connect through art. I believe that art has the power to heal, transform, and unite us. That’s what drives me to keep creating and curating.
I’m incredibly proud of the community we’ve built around JAMM Gallery. Seeing people from all walks of life come together to appreciate and engage with art is truly inspiring. I’m also proud of the way my art has resonated with people and brought joy into their lives.
If you’re looking for art that’s bold, inclusive, and thought-provoking, I invite you to explore my work at Painted Thingies and visit JAMM Gallery. Let’s create something beautiful together.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can significantly bolster the arts and creative industries by prioritizing the value and investment in artistic endeavors. A robust arts ecosystem begins with a strong foundation in education. Incorporating arts into the core curriculum from the earliest years fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, substantial public funding for arts programs, grants, and infrastructure is essential to support artists at all stages of their careers. Tax incentives for businesses and individuals supporting the arts can also stimulate growth and investment in the creative sector.
Creating a supportive infrastructure is another crucial component of a thriving arts ecosystem. Artists need accessible and affordable workspaces to develop their craft. Arts districts and cultural hubs provide essential platforms for artists to connect, exhibit, and collaborate. Additionally, ensuring high-speed internet access for artists is paramount in today’s digital age, enabling them to reach wider audiences and access valuable resources.
Fostering collaboration, diversity, and mentorship is key to a vibrant arts community. Partnerships between government, businesses, and arts organizations can leverage resources and expertise to achieve shared goals. Prioritizing diversity and inclusion ensures that a wide range of perspectives and experiences are represented in the arts. Mentorship programs can provide invaluable guidance and support to emerging artists, helping them navigate the challenges of the industry.
Building a strong market for art is essential to the sustainability of the creative sector. Artists deserve fair compensation for their work, and copyright protection is crucial to safeguard their intellectual property. Investing in arts marketing and promotion can help increase public awareness and appreciation for the arts, driving demand for creative products and services.
Finally, cultivating a supportive audience is vital for the long-term success of the arts. Arts outreach programs can engage communities and build a strong foundation of support. Making arts events and spaces accessible to people of all abilities is essential for creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. Encouraging critical engagement with art fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for the creative process.
JAMM Gallery embodies many of these principles. By providing a platform for diverse artists and hosting community events, we contribute to building a supportive creative ecosystem. Our gallery space serves as a hub for artists to connect and showcase their work, while our online presence expands accessibility. We are committed to fostering a welcoming environment for all, regardless of artistic experience or background. Additionally, JAMM Gallery actively participates in local arts initiatives, collaborating with other organizations to strengthen the arts community as a whole.
By implementing these strategies, society can create a thriving arts ecosystem where artists can flourish and contribute to the enrichment of our culture.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the profound connection it fosters. It’s the privilege of sharing a piece of your soul, your vision, and your world with others. To witness how art can evoke emotions, spark conversations, and even inspire change is truly humbling. There’s an indescribable magic in knowing that something you’ve created can resonate with someone on a deeply personal level. It’s like building a bridge between hearts and minds, and that connection is the ultimate reward.
Beyond that, the creative process itself is a continuous journey of self-discovery. Each piece is a reflection of who I am in that moment, and as I grow and evolve, so does my art. It’s a constant exploration of the human experience, and that intellectual and emotional growth is incredibly fulfilling.
