We recently connected with June and have shared our conversation below.
Hi June, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned the art of songwriting through a journey of trial and error, navigating the intricacies of the music industry by immersing myself in the studio environment. Understanding vocal recording techniques and song structure was pivotal, but what truly propelled me forward was following my gut and intuition. My producer-engineer ‘Lab Ox’ advice to focus on creating memorable lyrics became a cornerstone of my process. If I couldn’t remember what I wrote, I knew it wasn’t impactful enough.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of patience in the creative process. “Replace Me” started as a completely different song, but I felt its potential and persisted in rewriting and reconstructing it until it felt right. This taught me that timing is everything in art; rushing or forcing a song can hinder its true potential.
I believe the essential skills for any songwriter include perseverance and adaptability. The music industry can be unpredictable, but staying committed to my vision and constantly refining my skills has been key. Learning to trust my instincts and not seeking validation solely from external sources has also been crucial. Instead, I focus on whether I’m personally proud of what I create and whether it resonates with me deeply.
Moreover, exercising my skills regularly—whether through practicing piano, vocals, or writing—has been instrumental in my growth. It’s not just about technical proficiency; it’s about translating my personal thoughts into something meaningful that others can connect with.
My journey in songwriting has been about embracing challenges, learning from them, and never giving up. Each hurdle has contributed to my development, and I’ve come to understand that timing plays a significant role in success. By balancing persistence with the willingness to rewrite and improve, I’ve been able to evolve as a songwriter and artist.

June, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I dove headfirst into the music world at just 16, releasing my first single at 18. Piano lessons from the ripe age of 3, thanks to my parents. That’s where my musical journey began, realizing early on that music could be more than a passion—it could be a full-time gig, blending writing and singing into my creative repertoire.
What sets me apart? It’s my unwavering determination to chase my dreams in an industry where doubt can sneak up on you. It’s a constant mental battle that I’m always pushing against. I’ve learned it’s not about sprinting towards some imaginary finish line, but about discovering who I am and what drives me creatively. Finding that peace and satisfaction in my art is everything; there’s no scoreboard that says “you’ve made it.”
My music? It mirrors my free-spirited vibe. You might catch me swaying from pop-folk rhythms to deep house beats or diving into punchy, dance-worthy pop breakbeats. Lately, I’ve been collaborating with other artists to explore new sounds and ideas. I want my listeners to feel like they’re taking a journey with me, hearing the stories woven into every song. I’m all about capturing the diverse emotions we humans feel inside, translating them into music that hits home.
Ultimately, I’m striving to connect deeply with people through my music, offering a blend of moods and vibes that reflect the richness of life itself.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For many artists and creatives, myself included, the most rewarding aspect often lies in the ability to connect with others on a deep, emotional level through their work. Whether it’s evoking strong feelings, sparking new thoughts, or simply bringing joy and beauty into someone’s life, knowing that your creation has made a meaningful impact on another person is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a way to communicate and share something personal, yet universal, with the world. Additionally, the process of creation itself can be deeply satisfying — the exploration, experimentation, and growth that comes with honing one’s craft and expressing oneself artistically is a continuous source of reward.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Creating music, writing songs, or expressing myself through art involves tapping into personal emotions and experiences. It’s a process that requires openness and reflection, often spent in solitary moments refining ideas, experimenting with different sounds, and overcoming occasional creative hurdles. Success isn’t just about fame or commercial outcomes; it’s about finding personal satisfaction and staying true to my artistic vision. The connection between my art and me is more than just technical skill; it’s a deep emotional bond that might not be immediately obvious to those who haven’t experienced it firsthand. This journey showcases the diverse facets of my creativity, highlighting both the emotional depth and the technical aspects of my artistic expression.
