We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mory Rosas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mory below.
Mory, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
One of the reasons I choose my career is because my little girl dream was to travel the world. As I grew older I got a pretty good feeling, that having a regular job or regular career, or even having my own business, it was going to allow me the flexibility to take as many vacations as I had visualize for my life. When you have a career you are responsible for many duties that are very difficult to delegate and the institution or business depends on you. When you have your own business it is even more difficult to take vacations because everything and everyone depends on you making the calls an a daily basis.
That particular decision has allowed me to travel the world. I have been to more than 50 countries and more than 250 major cities in the world.
I knew early in life that one of the things that I enjoyed more was my flexibility. That became very clear when I had my son. I was working as a legal assistant at a law firm and my son was only 9 months old. I would call the babysitter several times during the day to check on him. I was always looking for opportunities or even excuses to go home early. I felt like in a cage. I felt that I could not give the best of me to a career if I had to be in an office for 8 hrs or more. That setting was not going to allowed me the flexibility to explore my full potential.
I am so glad I found Mary Kay and from the beginning I saw the benefits of being a leader and not a manger. When you are a leader you learn to first of all be an example than teach people what you expect, and inspect the expectations.
Our philosophy is:
#1.- I teach you how.
#2.- I show you how.
#3.- You show me how.
#4.- Inspect what I expect.
When you develop a business with that philosophy in mind, it will free you in so many ways, and it will allowed you to take as many vacations as you can afford to take.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Morayma Rosas, most people call me “Mory” for short. I am originally from Mexico, from the state of Chihuahua that borders Texas. Where I come from, a small town in the mountains, there are no opportunities for women. It’s primarily agriculture area and you ether work in the fields or you stay home and raise kids. My uncle said to me one day, why do you want to leave your family, your life here is good. You can marry one of your neighbors, build a 2 room adobe house across the street and just settle. That is good enough for you.
That advice sounded like a death sentence to me. I did not see myself there the rest of my life. I wanted to travel the world and make a difference in people’s life.
I emigrated to this country at the age of 16 yrs old, facing a lot of dangers, a language barrier, I had no family in this country, and on top of everything I was a woman.
When I left, there was a lot of judgement on my parents, and a lot of pressure to bring me back home. They kept telling my mother that I was going to get lost in this society that was very contaminated with sex and drugs.
Luckily I had a very close relationship with my mother and we communicated almost on a daily basis. She would call and say to me, “mija” your are strong, you are smart, and you are very brave. You decided to go to USA for the opportunities available to you. Find them, look for them everywhere. Something great is waiting for you. You can do anything you set your mind to achieve. Her words permeated my mind and even though there were a lot of temptation around me, nothing was going to derail me from my hopes and dreams. It was not easy at the beginning, specially because of the language barrier, the opportunities were very limited. The jobs that were available to me were cleaning, and hospitality like restaurants, and hotels. I had 16 different jobs during my first 2 years in this country. I was not lazy. I worked very hard at every single job that I had, I just knew none of them were going to take me to the american dream that I was looking for. I am very proud of myself because I was never afraid to work hard and do everything with excellence. And I am prouder about myself for being breve enough not to settle for less than I deserved. And sharing my story has empowered many other women to do the same. Fear stops us all. Most people, specially women tend to step backwards when they face fears. Few people step forward when facing fear and difficult situations, and even fewer women go beyond fear.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I was approached with the Mary Kay Opportunity by a neighbor. She knocked on my door, offered some lipstick samples, and call me the next day to get my opinion. I said to her that I didn’t like any of the colors and I had been wanting to find a favorite shade that I can use on a regular basis. She invited me to an event where there will be all shades of lipsticks for me to tried them on so that I can choose the right color for me. That sounded very exciting. It was like an invitation to taste different candies and decide which one was my favorite and take it home with me.
Well, there were no lipsticks, instead there was a a woman explaining the marketing compensation plan, and asking again and again to sign up tonight, sign up tonight. I got scared and immediately thought that it was a scam. I wanted to run away from there. They kept explaining about the ladder of success and how every step I was going to be trained on and accompanied to support my success. The women there were so happy. They were so excited. They were accomplishing their dreams, and there I was, overworked and underpaid, and I had almost forgotten my own dreams.
It was inspiring, but It was not for me. I was not the sales type. I had no friends, who was I going to sell to, and on top of that I did not speak fluent English. It sounded too good to be true, so it is probably a scam.
I stopped answering the phone to my sweet neighbor, and I went on with my busy life that was not taking me to my american dream.
Luckily she reached out to me again. She was moving up in the business, she was earning her MK career car and she wanted me to be part of her team.
I started to look at the opportunity with different mentality and decided to try it. It was very difficult at the beginning because I could not see myself doing what they were doing. I was very attached to a way of being. I was very quiet and introverted.
So many people stay stuck in their life, because they’re too attached to a way of being, without realizing that we can change anything and everything we are willing to change. I decided to be a good student, to apply all the tools that they gave me and to be obedient and trust the process. The rest is history. Of course there were many missed steps, and many fall backs, but when you’re consistent and take responsibility for your life, you can achieve anything you set your mind to achieve.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Our world changes continuously, but in my life time, nothing had prepared me for what we had to face….the “pandemic”.
This was an unprecedented time when nobody was prepared for the magnitude of this life threatening situation that we had never faced before. For my line of business, it felt like the end of the world.
Our system was to meet people out and about, convince them to give you their contact information in a brief conversation. Convinced them to book an appointment and open their home to a “stranger” to come in and do a demonstration of our products. Something that in the past could sound somewhat interesting, now it represented something terrifying.
Some of my downline were lucky enough to have a solid and loyal customer base that continued to buy their favorite products, but most of us depended on new customer and new sales, but where are we going to find them, how are we going to approached them, how are we going to market our products differently. Oh, wait a minute, there is something called “social media”, and everybody is getting hooked on it, because there is nothing else to do. Well, how do we do it, how do I start, what is that zoom thing everybody is getting on and people, school and everybody is getting on. Wait a minute, here is a great opportunity that we have ignored for years and we have barely tap into it. Let’s jump into it. Well to make the story short, that period of 2020-20221 we had the best year in sales of my 27 years in the business. It was a rollercoaster of emotions fighting the resistance to change. Again, we’re to attached to a way of being, and being on social media is not very attractive for my generation. It was quite a learning curve that we had to go through to not only survive, but to strive during that time. It was definitely one of the biggest pivot in our business, in my career and in my life.
