Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Courtney Adams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Courtney, thanks for joining us today. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
I come from a family business that was focused on generational continuity and sustainability. My paternal grandfather created an engine re-building business in 1953 that thrived in the same small town that we continue to reside in. Family businesses have the advantage of open and direct communication channels among family members. This can create efficient decision-making, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
Family dynamics can sometimes spill over into the business environment, leading to conflicts and disagreements. Which, believe me, happens! It is pertinent to establish clear boundaries between family and business roles. Of course, circumstances may become blurry throughout the venture, but strong communication has to be number one.

Courtney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Starting Leo + mamas was a great way to bring about a change of pace & create a welcoming environment in our small desert town. By offering an array of gift items, we have provided a diverse range of products for our customers to choose from. Additionally, by emphasizing the importance of creating a safe space, we have created a place where people can feel comfortable and included.
By offering a variety of gift items, we have catered to different tastes and preferences, making our store appealing to a wide range of customers. This diversity can attract more people and increase the chances of finding something unique and special.
In a small town setting, personalized customer service can make a significant impact. Taking the time to get to know our customers, understanding their needs, and offering assistance is our mantra. We take pride in the loyalty of our guests & repeat shoppers. Our motto: The Local Spot To Shop. And we are just that!

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Leo + Mamas, strategically located in the heart of our town, serves as a hub for both the west and east sides of the community. Situated in a small strip mall that houses five other small businesses.
By being easily accessible from both the west and east sides, we have been able to attract a diverse customer base. Each week, new customers from the neighboring areas discover Leo + Mamas, contributing to our growing clientele.
We are immensely grateful for the support we have received from our neighbors. Their patronage has been instrumental in our success and has allowed us to establish ourselves as a beloved local establishment. The loyalty and word-of-mouth recommendations from our customers have helped Leo + Mamas thrive.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
Being a small business in California is indeed a challenging endeavor that requires dedication and perseverance. The past year, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, has posed unprecedented challenges for businesses like ours. However, despite the difficulties, there have been moments of unexpected success and overwhelming community support.
During the initial stages of the pandemic, when restrictions allowed us to operate with certain limitations, our business experienced a surge in popularity. It seemed that the community yearned for the sense of normalcy that shopping in person and interacting with others provided. The support we received during that time was truly remarkable, and it sparked a sense of hope and resilience within us.
Unfortunately, the past year has been an uphill battle. The increasing wholesale prices, soaring rent and insurance costs, and rising utility bills, gas prices, and market prices have affected not only us but the entire community. As a specialty store that offers retail therapy and unique gifts, we understand that our products are not considered necessities. This reality has further compounded the challenges we face.
While we have been honored to receive numerous awards in our town, we understand that recognition alone does not pay the bills. In response to the economic challenges, we have made the difficult decision to scale down our wholesale shopping and focus on cost-efficiency for both ourselves and our customers. We are exploring ways to adapt to the changing market, especially in the face of online stores that can offer items at lower costs.
Despite the current struggles, we are committed to doing everything in our power to keep our business afloat. We are exploring creative solutions, seeking support from the community, and working tirelessly to find a balance between providing a unique retail experience and ensuring our sustainability. We remain grateful for the unwavering support we have received thus far and look forward to brighter days ahead.
