Kimberly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
My personal success as an instructor comes from being very hands on and adaptable to my students individual needs and learning styles. I believe to be truly successful you must listen and understand the needs of your clients. Learning to dance can make people feel very self-conscious. I teach private lessons to create a safe space for people to learn at their own pace and in the style that works for them.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! I am a classically trained, certified dance instructor with over 20 years of teaching experience. I can take students from beginning level to advanced or anywhere in-between. I only teach private lessons because I love to help people learn based on their own individual needs. I teach partner dancing: Ballroom, Latin, Swing, Salsa, Country western and more! I will work with singles or couples. I love to help couples prepare for weddings! I offer both in-studio and in-home dance lessons. I can travel to you if this is more convenient.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I have had several “pivot” moments in my business.
The latest and most obvious was the pandemic. The unknown has never scared me that much. I actually kind of embraced it. My prior studio shut down for good. I actually felt like trying new things. I do love teaching so I decided to try teaching yoga. I was successful for a while but missed teaching dance terribly. Former students were reaching out and I knew all I had to do was find a new studio. I felt done with my old surroundings and the natural explorer in me was ready to find something new. Moving to San Diego county has been such a cool experience. The truth is business came back all at once! There were days I felt so happy about it and days where I just needed some help, it was overwhelming. I don’t know if a perfectly balanced schedule exists when you’re a creative. I’ve learned it is much like the ocean. The tide moves in, the tide moves out. Every day is a new day and to me it’s also kind of exciting and fun to see what this day will bring.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the thing I love the most in what I do is the people and the music! I work with all genres of music and people, from all walks of life. Being creative with music is the most fun. I also love working with my regulars and seeing them progress over time. For my wedding couples, I love simple things like receiving a “we nailed it!” text the next day knowing everything turned out great and they were a hit with their friends and families. Love it.
