We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Oderoha a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rebecca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on to date will have to be STAGES. STAGES is meaningful to me for many reasons but, the main reason would have to be its depiction of growth. Making this project has been pivotal to not only my career but my womanhood. As someone who has loved and lost it was important for me to vent in a way that was palpable. STAGES embodies that and has themes of love, pain, and liberation.

Rebecca, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Rebecca Oderoha and I am a singer-songwriter. I was born and raised in Los Angeles to Nigerian immigrant parents and have been sing since the tender age of 8 years old. Growing up I would perform in school plays and sing in the choir every chance I could get. Due to a tumultuous home environment I decided it was best to put my studies first and focus on college. At the age of 19 I was ready to begin a music career and decided to release my first song “19”. From that moment on I knew this was the career for me. Between 2021-2023 I took time away from music to finish college and graduated with a 3.0 gpa. I am now more than ready to share my gifts with the world and am looking forward to being a household name.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is purpose. God blessed me with a gift and I get to share it with others. Through sharing my gifts I help people heal from things that they may not discuss, make some happy, and even give hope. It doesn’t get any better than that in my opinion. Living purposefully allows me to enjoy my life and maintain my humility. Living purposefully also allows me to always see the bigger picture and make decisions based on discernment. I am grateful to be blessed with the gifts I have and look forward to sharing it with others until my time here is finished.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During the years 2021-2023 I took a break from releasing music. Everything bad you can think of double it because that is exactly what transpired. In 2021 my sisters and I were victims of vehicular assault resulting in broken bones and surgery for my sisters. This occurred one week post release of my EP titled “Most Improved”. As you can imagine, I literally was not able to focus on my project anymore and had to file for disability, check into therapy, and start physical therapy. In 2022 I graduated college with my Bachelors of Science degree with a major of Environmental Occupational Health and Safety. I immediately got hired post-graduation and started working in Corporate America. For once it seemed like things were more stable for me to chase my dreams again. Shortly after, 2023 rolled around and a relationship I was in for 4 years had come to an abrupt end. Devastated, I decided to pour this into my project which birthed “STAGES” because I too was getting ready to go through a the stages of grief.
