We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jazzy Frizzle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jazzy below.
Jazzy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been a full time voice actor for about 5 years. I had a 9-5 job that I worked in the beginnings of my VO career, but I took the dive when it began to be an “obstacle” in my voiceover work.
Going from having a consistent paycheck to inconsistent work was a big jump that I don’t think I prepared myself for properly. I wish that I would’ve prepped more financially, because even if your paydays may change, the bill due dates do not. One thing I would’ve done differently is just having all of my bills paid at minimum, 2 months ahead of time. I was eventually able to meet that goal, but I think it would’ve been less stressful if I could’ve started out that way.
Jazzy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started off as your typical theatre/choir kid, and loved the performing arts. I always wanted to be an actor, but as I got older, I realized that I loved the luxury of not being famous and doing things like grocery shopping in peace. So naturally, voiceover seemed to be the perfect fit. And it was.
I have lent my voice across most genres of voiceover, commercial, narration, animation, video games and more. And of course, my most fun and proud projects are under NDA still lol.
I’m also a big advocate and try to do whatever work I can with my team at Voices of Color. We offer affordable resources for talent, networking events, and even host the VGM (Voices of Global Majority) database to assist with authentic and inclusive casting. Representation matters, and I will continue to do my best to make sure everyone feels that way.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Nothing is guaranteed.
The reason why we voice actors charge higher “per hour” rates, is because that hour is not promised. Recasts happen. Cancellations happen. And those only happen if you book the gig in the first place. This industry is competitive, and a “successful” voice actor only books about 4% of their auditions.
Just seeing a higher dollar amount does not mean a higher paycheck.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to continue to drive effective change while being able to pay my bills because who doesn’t want to do that?
I also want to continue to succeed in this field because of the flexibility and the time I get to spend with my family, to continue to make them a priority.
