We recently connected with Anthony Harvey Jr. and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Earning a full-time living from creative work is achievable, but it requires patience, resilience, and strategic planning. While my journey was not linear, each step taught me valuable lessons. Transitioning from a passion for creativity to earning a full-time living can be a daunting journey. For many, including myself, it was not a straightforward path. For those looking to embark on a similar path, remember to invest in your craft, build connections, and stay adaptable. Success often comes from a combination of passion, perseverance, and a willingness to learn.
When I first began exploring the music industry, it was more of a side hustle than a career. I was working a standard 9-to-5 job while dedicating evenings and weekends to my gigs and studio sessions.
Next, I set up a website and leveraged social media to share my work. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook became essential for networking and attracting clients. I learned the importance of personal branding early on. How I presented myself online significantly influenced my opportunities.
One of the key strategies that helped me sustain my music career was diversifying my income. I explored various avenues: freelance gigs, teaching music, and production. This not only provided financial security but also allowed me to explore different aspects of my creativity.
Lastly, it’s important to build connections. I am a firm believer of the concept that “It’s not what you know it’s who you know”.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect often lies in the ability to express myself authentically and connect with others on a deep emotional level through music. It’s about seeing my ideas take shape, evoke emotions, provoke thoughts, or simply bring joy to others. Additionally, the process of creation itself, whether it’s writing, producing, composing, or performing, can be incredibly fulfilling, providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment that transcends everyday experiences.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society should recognize the importance of arts and creativity in enriching cultural life and shaping societal values. This includes celebrating artists and their contributions through awards, exhibitions, and public recognition.
Investing in arts education at all levels cultivates the next generation of creatives. This includes integrating arts into school curricula, offering vocational training, and supporting lifelong learning for artists.
