We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamina Muhammad a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tamina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
In high school I always knew I would do something related to art. I had so many artistic passions that it was hard to zero in. I felt I got the most joy out of sharing my art and instructing and motivating others in their art form .

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an illustration artist who starting designing as early as I can hold a pen. I always felt I had a very creative mind and unique style. I designed clothing, shoes, sneakers, jackets, hats, logos and school variety show backdrops. I’ve done murals and record covers for up and coming artist in N.J and N.Y. During the time of the Graffiti Movement in New York I developed my own style of lettering and characters I would be commissioned for. I resided in Arizona for 14 yrs I merged my urban style with Southwest art and African art representing my multicultural upbringing. During my time in AZ I got involved with Raw Artist Showcase and that gave me more opportunities to connect with the community . I showcased my work in traveling art galleries . I entered and won multiple art competitions locally and internationally. I was introduced to Face painting which I quickly developed into a fan favorite sharing my unique style in a different way. I traveled teaching my art style in the face painting community around the US and got offers to teach internationally as well. I became a sponsered artist for a stencil company and had my own line that was a hit around the world. I’ve been featured in magazines and and guest judge for multiple competitions. I’m the winner of Minnesota very 1st Art Battle Competition which was such an honor to be a part of and make it to City Championship in Omaha Nebraska. The greatest achievement I feel most proud about is teaching children in a program call Artmobile run by East Side Arts Council. I am also proud to lead the senior citizens art program called Creative Connections run by East Side Arts Council. I feel art unites people and it is something that is being removed from schools. It is the best feeling to share your passion and motivate others to believe in themselves and trust the process. I love inspiring and being inspired.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel that society can keep making room for more programs for art. Proving space and funding for local artist to share and inspire the youth of the future . Keeping art alive . Art is so greatly needed

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew more about grants and applying for them. I would have been able to offer the community a lot more creative workshops or drop in classes
