We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tiara Cohen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tiara below.
Alright, Tiara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I have taken many risks in my life. I personally feel that’s what living life is all about. No matter how much you research or ponder, you will never know 100% that risk you are taking is worth unless you take it. One of the biggest risk I have taken was leaving Fayetteville, N.C. in 2018. I am a native of Fayetteville due to both of my parents being in the military. I moved after highschool for a few years and returned in 2006. When I came back to Fayetteville, I didn’t plan to stay long term, but I knew that before I relocated again, I wanted to have a degree or certification “under my belt”. In 2018, I had been a licensed Cosmetologist for 3 years. My business was doing well, but I honestly felt like I couldn’t go any further in my city. I felt that my resources and options were limited. I was suffocating to be honest. So I made the decision to move to the RDU area with no clientele or set plan. Just faith, hustle, a skill set and three kids. It was a struggle the first 6 months building my clientele. I kept going back to Fayetteville on the weekend to service my clients that didn’t want to travel. When I finally stopped commuting and started putting my energy in my new city, my clientele started to grow. Not only did my clientele start to grow, but I began to cross of goals that had been on my to-do list. My kids began to be exposed to better resources and schools. My mental health and emotional intelligence has flourished. It has been six years now and I’m glad I believed in what I couldn’t see. I’m glad I took the risk.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My main brand is Hair Miracles. I am a licensed Cosmetologist, licensed Cosmetology Instructor,Certified Hair Loss Practitioner and soon to be Trichologist. My focus is healthy hair. I educate my clients on the health of their hair and how to maintain it in between appointments. In 2020, I began to sell my Hair Miracles Scalp Serum which has been very popular. Many customers rave about the growth they have experienced since purchasing my product and using it properly. Hearing the great feedback and seeing the pictures of the progress my customers are making always brings a smile to my face. I am currently working on getting my products in stores.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I have done hair since I was 12 years old. I always did hair while working various jobs. I knew that I wanted to be a full-time cosmetologist when I was in high school, but was told it was a hobby and not a career. I was 30 years old when I finally went back to school to obtain my cosmetology license. Even though I started late, I’m glad I started when I did because of I would have made a lot of money coming out of high school with no money management, I definitely would have dropped the ball. The biggest milestone I have hit so far was becoming a cosmetology instructor. I love helping students develop their skills and go into the field.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
A lot of the people that followed me on social media were people I knew from school. I built my social media by being myself for one and being consistent. I would post something hair related daily, normally early in the morning when the traffic was high. I would tell people to remain true to who you are. Post your content as if nobody is watching it but you. And be consistent. Post your business everyday.
