Mengle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?

Overall, I am happy as a business owner, though these past few years have been challenging. From the pandemic to the entertainment industry strike, everything has slowed down significantly. To survive, I had to think about expanding into related businesses instead of closing down. Luckily, we expanded our scope from just post-production to include game localization, which has kept us running.

Many times, during moments of struggle, I wondered if having a regular job would be easier. I wouldn’t have to worry about wages or ensuring my employees have work. I wouldn’t have to bear the pressure of running a business in a slow industry. I would just need to do the work assigned to me and enjoy regular breaks like everyone else.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?

I’d be happy to share the story of how I met my cofounder, who is now my husband, Jifu Li. We met while studying at the American Film Institute (AFI). During my second year, AFI assigned me to mentor a first-year student, and Jifu was the only person I was assigned to mentor.

We quickly connected over our shared passion for film and technology. Throughout our mentorship, we collaborated on various projects and discovered that we worked exceptionally well together. Both of us are focused on creative aspects, but while Jifu concentrated more on the technological side, I focused on building client connections.

After graduation, we continued to work together, leveraging our complementary skills and extensive network. This collaboration led us to see the potential for a successful business. Eventually, we founded our company, Lerfilm, aiming to revolutionize the post-production industry by integrating innovative solutions for Editing, Sound design, Music, VFX, Color grading, and game localization.

Our professional relationship blossomed into a personal one, and today, I’m proud to say that my cofounder is not just my business partner but also my husband. The foundation of our relationship, built on mutual respect and a shared vision, has allowed us to overcome challenges and achieve milestones that we couldn’t have accomplished individually. I’m grateful for the journey we’ve embarked on together and excited for the future of Lerfilm.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

In our field, reputation is always greater than advertisement. The best source of new clients for us has been word-of-mouth referrals from our existing clients. We have built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality work and innovative solutions, which has led to satisfied clients recommending us to their colleagues and partners.
