We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Doc Martin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Doc below.
Hi Doc, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
There are so many wonderful qualities I got from both of my parents. From my mom, I believe that I developed a strong desire to fight for social justice and be an advocate for people. When I was a kid, she exposed me to so many of the wonderful leaders who fought for the rights of the poor, for people of color and ultimately for equality. She exposed me to people like Malcolm and Martin and Medgar, and Huey. I saw them and wanted to make an impact like them. She pushed me to become a lawyer so I could do that.
From my dad, I believe I got my musical talent, a desire for a formal education and this overall desire to be a renaissance man. He seemed interested in learning as much as he could about the world, and I get that from him. He was a teacher, a DJ, a Captain in the Army, a horn player, an electrical engineer, and a world class singer who got a scholarship to college based off his baritone vocals. I am like him. I ended up becoming a lawyer, a singer, a community organizer, an actor, a screenplay writer and executive producer of a movie. Wish Dad was still here, but I am thankful for his legacy.
I am thankful for both of my parents.
Doc, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I suppose if I could boil it down to a few things, I am a civil rights attorney, and I love to sing and make music! to that end, I go by the stage name “Doc Martin,” and am the lead singer of a band called Brownsuede. I’ve got music as a solo act and with Brownsuede out on all streaming platforms. I’m super thankful for the traction that both have been able to garner so far. I accomplished my dream of getting on the radio! Funny thing is, once you accomplish one goal, you want more. Now my goal is to get in rotation on a major radio station. Check out my band Brownsuede’s songs, “The One,” “Fade Away” and “In My Dreams!” I think you’ll like them!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It’s easy to get down on yourself and get discouraged when things seem so daunting. I deal with that often in my career as a lawyer, taking on big corporations and powerful entities all the time. But my faith has saved me so many times. Recognizing that I have no need to be afraid because God is with me, goes before me and makes a way for me. He gives me the victory even in the midst of what may seem impossible.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As an artist, I think that I just want to tell stories that are based on my life that I feel that people can relate to; make folks feel like they can conquer their fears because I did. They can heal because I did. I want that to come across in my music and that why I feel that people can resonate with my sound.
