We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Courtney Farris . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Courtney below.
Courtney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started my business I went through a company to start my LLC and that was just a horrible idea. At the time I thought I was making the right decision because I was nervous to mess the paperwork up but it took over 2 months for me to get my LLC and actually start taking clients in my suite. I had already signed my lease and was waiting on my LLC to move forward with all of my other documentation, licenses and insurance. This was a huge mistake because I then found out with creating another business that it took less than a couple weeks for me to get the documentation.

Courtney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My husband always tells me that I have a very obsessive personality. In reality it’s true and at the time I thought nothing of it. I was actually in school getting my associates degree in business and it was my last year. I had seen a friend online posting about doing lashes and I had no clue what they even were. Well I ended up doing a lot of research and became obsessed with them and the idea of lashes and making women look beautiful. Well, I had to finish up my year in college and wanted to make sure that this wasn’t just an obsession that I would get over in a couple months and six years later it’s still an obsession.
When I first started learning how to do lashes it was just a two day course and they sent me on my way. Luckily I had done enough research and had a lot of family and friends to practice on that I ended up getting really good at classics before I was even done with esthetician school. Once graduation and getting my esthetician license, I worked out in Scottsdale where I had been at for 2 years and they taught me how to do volume and how to really run a business. It was a great learning experience but I had always known I wanted to be my own boss.
Growing up my mom had always been a small business owner and is a licensed cosmetologist and I had always loved that she was so involved with everything my brother and I did when we were kids. This then made me want to also pursue my own business and have the freedom to be involved with my future children and family as well.
I think what sets me apart from other lash artists is that I am truly genuine and love what I do. I try my hardest to make my clients happy and provide a safe space for them to really express themselves. I love my job because not only do I get to enhance everyone’s beauty I also get to make best friends.
My career is something I had always dreamed of and am truly grateful for every client that has or had ever walked through my door.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson that I had to unlearn is not everyone is trustworthy. When I first started I wouldn’t require cc information when clients would book an appointment. That quickly turned into a lot of clients booking out slots for appointments and they just wouldn’t show up. I had to then learn the hard way for a couple weeks that I needed to implement a policy that required future clients to place a cc on file in order to book. It really made a difference and the number of no show clients drastically went down.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
My husband is a nurse and we were saving money to buy a house. When he saw how miserable I was working out in Scottsdale for someone else’s business he knew we had to make a change. Luckily he is an amazing husband and we both agreed that I could quit and start my dream.
