We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dawlat Elamin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dawlat below.
Dawlat, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The first time I got paid to do makeup was magical! It wasn’t just about the money (though that was nice!), it was about getting paid to do what I loved. It truly felt like a dream come true.
There were definitely some nerves on that first paid gig! Working with a client is different than creating looks for practice or school. But it was also incredibly rewarding. They trusted me to make them feel confident for their event, and that’s a huge responsibility I take seriously. It’s not just about applying makeup; it’s about enhancing their natural beauty and making them feel amazing. There’s nothing worse than a client who feels self-conscious about their makeup.
Seeing my client’s ecstatic reaction when they looked in the mirror? Oh, that’s pure joy. It’s the best part of this job, and it’s a feeling I hope to experience for a very long time.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Dawlat, a certified makeup and hairstylist with a passion for creativity that I’ve channeled into the beauty world for over 8 years now. My journey might not be your typical one – I actually started my career in dentistry! But even as a dentist, my artistic side always shined through.
While dentistry was a fulfilling path initially, and was my first chapter. My creative spirit always yearned for expression. So , I eventually decided to follow my true passion for beauty and took a leap of faith to pursue makeup artistry. It’s been an incredible journey that’s allowed me to combine my artistry with the joy of helping people look and feel their best.
My dentistry background might seem like an unexpected turn, but the meticulous attention to details I honed as a dentist translates beautifully into my work.
Now, I’m fortunate to have a thriving bridal business where brides entrust me with creating their dream wedding look a year in advance!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Makeup artistry deserves greater recognition as a skilled profession within the creative field. Highlighting the talent, training, and experience required can elevate its status and value. By featuring a wider range of artists, aesthetics, and techniques in media and marketing, we can promote inclusivity and empower all artists in the beauty world. Also, ensuring fair compensation for their services allows makeup artists to build sustainable careers.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Many people (including myself) grow up believing that changes are impossible. This can limit our willingness to step outside our comfort zones and lead to a fear of trying new things or taking risks. However, through my journey, I came to understand mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow. This shift in perspective allowed me to approach new experiences ultimately leading to greater success.
