We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juhee Choi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Juhee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was the Skyphos beer packaging and branding project. It was my first major project, so I had the chance to try out a lot of different ideas. Of course, there were some trial-and-error moments along the way, but these were great learning opportunities for me. While I had some experience with packaging, branding was new territory. As a designer, I usually focus on the design aspects, but this project taught me a lot about branding. Creating a new brand from scratch, instead of working with an existing one, required a lot of research and study. This project really helped me grow as a designer.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Juhee Choi, an illustrator and designer based in Los Angeles and South Korea.
I became interested in art since middle school and initially experienced Korea’s competitive art education system. During high school in the United States, I had the freedom to develop my own creative works. These diverse backgrounds and experiences have helped me build a solid artistic foundation and foster innovative thinking.
I primarily work in graphic design, offering a range of products and services such as packaging, posters, and brochures. A key problem I solve for my clients is delivering fast and precise design services. I take pride in completing high-quality designs within project timelines and have the ability to adapt to various styles and design languages according to client preferences.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my view, society should prioritize respecting the work of artists and creatives. Sometimes, a minority may undervalue design work, but myself and many designers around me invest tremendous dedication and effort in our work. Understanding and appreciating the time and thought that goes into designing is crucial. I believe it would be beneficial for everyone to understand the challenges designers face and to foster a supportive creative ecosystem.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding moment for me is seeing people actually using products or books I’ve designed. When I worked at my previous job, I felt immense satisfaction when a book I had designed was released, and I kept looking at it with pride.
