Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amari Morrison. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amari, appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
In 2020, I decided to take a leap of faith. I have always wanted to write stories but I felt as though I had another calling. It was during my sophomore year in college. I looked at my roommate and said, “I want to create for television.” Her eyes grew big as she encouraged me to take the plunge. From that point forward, I wrote my first script and submitted it for a competition. A couple of weeks passed and I received an email about my submission. They tore the script to shreds and I cried my eyes out. After a well needed mindset adjustment, I deleted the email and forgot about it. Did I let that stop me? Not at all. I made a promise to myself that I would learn everything that I could about film. I buried myself in endless books, YouTube Videos, and attempts at creating content on my own. Since 2020, I have been able to write, direct for programs like Fresh Films, and make meaningful connections in the industry.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am originally from Orlando, Florida but I currently reside near Atlanta, Georgia. Currently residing in Georgia has allowed me to hone in on my talents as it is an area that is booming with other like minded creatives. I have always been a go getter from a young child. My face was always hiding behind a book or watching movies. I was eight years old when my mom enrolled me in acting classes at YourAct Studios. For some reason, I did not have the confidence that I have adapted now, so I took a break from acting. As I transitioned from a teen to an adult, I truly wanted to become a novelist. For some reason, my heart would not let me completely attach to it. Who would have thought? Graduating with a degree in English but not wanting to write books seems ludicrous right? While my passion for writing novels fizzled, another fire was burning deep inside of me. The way my eyes and heart would flicker whenever I watched television was indescribable. Film has always been an escape for me as I have constantly experienced hardship, after hardship, after hardship. So, I have made it my life goal to inspire others one script at a time. Outside of film, I strive to use my social media following to uplift the minds and hearts of everyone. I wake up every day thinking, “How can I be of service?” We only have one life to live and I make it my duty to use the talents that I was given to erase norms and step outside of the box.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There was a time in my life when I was extremely and utterly depressed. Nothing, and I mean nothing could keep me happy. I was constantly looking for vices to fill that hole I was feeling in my spirit. It is difficult to talk about but there have been times where I would contemplate ending it all. Until I told myself, “You are worth it.” It was an unexplainable push. It had to be nothing but God. I began to get rid of anything in my life that was not allowing me to grow or bring me peace. I toyed with this for about three years as I was constantly becoming a new version of myself. It was a difficult process but everyday, every hour, every minute, and every second, I was becoming a better woman. Making these well needed changes has permitted me to be a better friend, sister, partner, and definitely a better filmmaker. My creativity has soared and allows me to share my story with others who may be encountering the same situations. I am always evolving.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My end goal is to establish a career that is embedded in filmmaking and philanthropy. One day, I will have my own production company and movie studio that will allow all filmmakers from various walks of life to tell their stories. There are zero limits on storytelling but I want to be the one that helps underrepresented individuals have a platform to shine their light. On the other end of the spectrum, I would like to develop a mentoring program for young girls. Being a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. has shown me that we have to continue to uplift not only ourselves but women that are coming after us. It would be an honor to show young women that if I did it, then they can do it too. Helping and encouraging humanity is a way of being for me so I will be doing that until the very end.
