We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Rose Hirsch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa Rose, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I always knew I needed to be someone who made a living solely off of creating, but due to love of many things and my multi hyphenated nature, I was initially confused about how I could mend all of my creative parts.
After graduating college for musical theater, I began acting in the city, focusing mostly on the development of new musical projects. That was the first time I realized that birth and creation was deeply important to my soul. Throughout my 20s, I added singer-
songwriter and theatre book writer to my title, which further helped me to realize that birthing art was imperative to me.
But in 2020, during the pandemic when all theatre stopped, I fulfilled my life long dream of getting a birth doula certification. Since then, every birth I have assisted has only enhanced my personal art making. Because live birth really is an art.
Then because of my birth work and wisdom of the amazing connection between the pelvis and the voice, my vocal studio emerged naturally! I am known to guide my clients in finding and “birthing” their unique sound by quite literally singing from their p*ssy!
Melissa Rose, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began my creative journey as a singer. I believe that singing has the power to heal us and bring communities together. But most importantly, I believe that singing is an act of coming home to the body with pleasure. That’s what birth has taught me the most. That pleasure is our greatest weapon against pain – physical or emotional.
So my vocal embodiment sessions are deeply personal and full of care, healing, and awakening. They are for anyone who has a voice and a pelvis, not limited only to those with a uterus.
I teach in my home studio located on the Upper West Side, where I focus on environment, surrender, embodiment, pleasure and the shifts in the voice post pregnancy or post injury.
I have had the honor of working with hundreds of clients ranging from Broadway professionals to those simply looking to reconnect to their voices all over the world. No matter what level of singer you are, you are welcome in my studio!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social Media has been an amazing platform for me to connect with hundreds and thousands of singers! My first video that went viral on tiktok featured an incredible singer, Cassie Levine, who was showcasing my deeply specific method of getting my singers to “sing from their p*ssy.”
From that video, I gained a large following of folks that were both impressed and confused about my method. I think that is the key. Because our bodies are such taboo mysteries, I find that by speaking about birthing bodies on the internet, my destined audience will find me. I am such a birth need and find the connection between the pelvis and the voice FASCINATING. My content showcases that thrill! I am never trying to be anyone but myself on social platforms. My method is not for everybody! But those who are interested to learn more about their voice through the lens of their bodies will find me.
My advice is to be unequivocally yourself on the internet. Your crowd that’s meant for you will find you and stick with you! Be niche, specific, and consistent.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a woman, it is deeply important to me that all people with wombs understand the magic that is our bodies. The education is my number one goal in my studio. The more knowledge we have about our bodies, the more power we have against those trying to take away our rights.
My goal is to give my clients the gift of knowledge, the understanding that their vulnerability is their power, and lastly, a wealth of pleasure. By tuning into our own bodily pleasures through song and embodiment, I really do believe women can reclaim so much that we have lost.
