We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Monica Koziol. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Monica below.
Hi Monica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I drew my inspiration to start my own practice from my mentors in the field. They taught me the best research methods to implement to create success stories. To start my own practice I first had to conduct research, teach, and work at public clinics and private practices. Some of the key challenges were financial and bureaucratic in nature. From overhead expenses to building relationships it cost time and money. In retrospect I would have built a partnership sooner to share some of the trials and tribulations. My advice for a young professional who may be considering starting their own practice is surround yourself with successful mentors and business partners.
Monica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the medical mental health industry by seeing patients for individual and group therapy. I did research studies with Rush’s Univeristy in the Medical District of Chicago. I treated patients for substance abuse. My friends also have private practices and we get together to support one another. The problems we would solve include couple conflict, family conflict, school problems, anger management, parenting, and learning disabilities.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could back in time I would choose the same profession because I know the positive impacts I have made as a result of my contributions to the mental health field.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Besides training and knowledge I think it is most helpful to build relationships to succeed in my field. When people know your name and about the success you have had it generates referrals and more opportunities.
