We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Big Mike Hart a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Big Mike thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I am from Sacramento, Ca a city full of talented and amazingly gifted people. My foundational journey in music is built on the stage and studios of Sacramento’s music scene, but I realized I was becoming a big fish in a small pond. I knew I wanted to be a big fish in a big pond and in order for me to grow and maximize my potential, I had to move to a bigger city with more exposure. So In 2015 I took a risk a bet on myself by relocating to LA, where they were more opportunities to network, more musicians from all over the world with the same dreams as me, but different skill sets that I could possibly learn from. Taking that risk changed everything for me, it made me better and having the footing to stand firm in a shakeup business where only the strong survive. I have been blessed in the last 9 years in my career and non of my accomplishments would’ve happened if I didn’t step out on faith, and do the work.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the industry with a dream of being a music producer, songwriter, and musician. Fortunately my passion and purpose aligned and God saw fit for that to be my life story. I run a recording studio in North Hollywood, Ca, I tour the world with some of amazing artist as the guitarist and Musical Director. Now I am serious embarking on the journey as a contemporary jazz artist, and I must say it’s going extremely well, my debute single “Cigar Lounge” feat. Boney James went to #1 on the Billboard Charts! I think what sets me apart from others is I am unapologetic in my gift, I love who God made me to be, and the different versions I continue to grow to be always amazing me. Most people conform to fit in so they can get in the door, I standout and you have to come out the door to see me and I love that space because you r creative canvas is limitless when you’re outside the box, so I walk boldly in that. That what I’m most proud of as well, not being afraid to be who I created and designed to become, I love who I am but I love who I am becoming more. Through life’s experience both good and bad, help shape and mold me for the better. I understand growth comes from experiences that stretch you and I’m am my best me because of that. Big Mike Hart the brand is authentic, real, relatable, and reliable. I always say music is the intangible that touches all, and the goal with my music is to make you feel, remember, and create moment and memories that are genuine, just like love, pain, sweat, smiles, and tears I put in every melody, chord, lyric, and note played on my guitar.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
What I believe society can do to help support the creative community is simple and free. Share content, we all have social media and most often than not we will like and share somebody who is famous already content or go look up a viral moment all from word of mouth click bait stuff. Let’s normalize sharing the small business owners ad and independent artist song, most of the time it’s much better than anything the media tries to flood our timelines with anyway. And it doesn’t cost you dime, so that’s my take.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What’s driving my goals and mission is my family! I have a beautiful Queen and Princess I get to come home to every night, and their smiles light up my world. So I go out everyday into this world whether in the studio and on stage so I can come back and give them the world one piece at a time. They’re my world and they deserve the world, If that’s not motivation I don’t know what is!
