Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Murielle Cascone. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Murielle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
In general in the photography industry, everyone strives to get the sharpest photos with the sharpest lenses. A few years ago, I delved into creative photography which gives you permission to shoot with blur. It felt freeing and also fun. It brought something different to my work. So blur and also grain are not quite fully and generally acceptable in the industry among photographers and by clients.
Murielle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Murielle Cascone. I live in New York with my husband and daughter. I’m a photographer in addition to being a Finance professional. I have been creating with my camera for almost ten years now, when my daughter was born. A few years later, I started taking pictures of families, as a paid professional. I specialize in portraits, engagement, maternity and families, all in natural light. While taking pictures as a business, I continued to work creatively for myself. A lot of my personal creative work is done specifically with Lensbaby products. They help me think creatively and get me out of any rut. They introduce blur, bokeh and color into my images, and that’s what I love about them. My professional work is clean, sharp and traditional to satisfy my paid clients who come to me for traditional shots. But every so often, at the end of sessions (after taking the traditional shots), I asked them if I can take some fun shots with my specialty lenses or creative effect tools. They usually agree. It’s fun for me and for them. They get the usual stuff and also a couple of unique shots. My hope is that someday, people will appreciate and accept creative photography in addition to traditional photography. I also love working with natural light, especially during golden hour.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Photography classes other than Youtube, photography communities (Click Community and Unraveled Academy), and Lensbaby lenses. Once I found out about them, I joined them and started to feel brave to go on this creative journey. After many years, I still love taking classes on different topics.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal is to find my own voice and be my true self in my art, and hopefully inspire someone else as well. On that journey, I’m happy to create for myself, my family and for my clients. I document life’s events and preserve memories.
