We were lucky to catch up with Cayla Spring recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cayla, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
One of the most unexpected challenges in my creative journey emerged from the hardships of discovering my autoimmune condition. When I first started experiencing symptoms like unpredictable weight fluctuations and persistent feelings of inadequacy due to my health, it deeply affected both my mental and physical well-being. It was a confusing and isolating time, navigating through doctor visits, tests, and adjusting to a new normal that seemed uncertain.
During this period, I struggled with maintaining consistency in my creative work. There were days when I lacked the energy or motivation to even pick up a pen or sit at my computer. The frustration of not feeling good enough seeped into my creative process, hindering my ability to generate ideas or execute them effectively.
One particular moment stands out vividly: I had committed to a significant project deadline, but a sudden flare-up of symptoms left me bedridden for days. The setback felt like a major blow. I questioned whether I could continue pursuing my creative ambitions while managing the unpredictability of my health.
However, through this adversity, I gradually learned to adapt and find ways to keep moving forward. I began prioritizing self-care and listening to my body’s signals more attentively. This included establishing a flexible schedule that allowed me to work during times when my energy levels were higher and to rest when needed. I also sought support from fellow creatives who understood the challenges of balancing health and artistic endeavors.
Over time, I embraced my journey with autoimmune disease as part of my creative narrative. I realized that by sharing my experiences authentically, I could not only raise awareness but also inspire others facing similar setbacks. This newfound perspective infused my work with a deeper sense of purpose and resilience.
Ultimately, I resolved the unexpected challenges by embracing flexibility, self-compassion, and a determination to show others that setbacks do not define one’s creative potential. Each obstacle became an opportunity to innovate and grow, reinforcing my belief that creativity can thrive despite adversity, and sometimes, because of it.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
One resource that has profoundly influenced my perspective and daily mindset is “The Daily Stoic” by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman. This book consists of daily meditations drawn from the teachings of Stoic philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus. Each day, I engage with a new meditation that encourages reflection, mindfulness, and practical wisdom.
“The Daily Stoic” has been transformative in how it shapes my thinking day by day. It provides me with insightful principles and practical advice on how to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and clarity. These meditations often prompt me to examine my reactions to situations, prioritize what truly matters, and focus on continuous self-improvement.
One particular aspect I appreciate is how the book emphasizes the Stoic virtues of courage, wisdom, justice, and temperance, guiding me to cultivate these qualities in both personal and professional settings. By incorporating these teachings into my daily routine, I’ve found myself better equipped to handle adversity, make sound decisions, and maintain a balanced perspective amidst the pressures of entrepreneurial endeavors.
Beyond “The Daily Stoic,” I’ve also been influenced by various other resources that have shaped my management and entrepreneurial philosophy. Books like “The Lean Startup” by Eric Ries have helped me adopt a mindset of iterative improvement and customer-centric innovation. Similarly, Simon Sinek’s “Start With Why” has been instrumental in clarifying the purpose and vision behind my entrepreneurial pursuits, emphasizing the importance of aligning actions with core values.
Additionally, I find inspiration in essays and talks by thought leaders such as Seth Godin and Tim Ferriss, whose insights on creativity, productivity, and personal development continually challenge and enrich my approach to business and life.
Overall, these resources have collectively contributed to my evolving management and entrepreneurial thinking, equipping me with invaluable frameworks, strategies, and perspectives to navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and strive for continuous growth.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I’ve had to unlearn is the expectation that every day should be perfect and free from setbacks. Early in my career, I often set unrealistic standards for myself, believing that success meant flawless execution and constant positivity. This mindset led to unnecessary stress and disappointment when inevitable challenges arose.
The backstory behind this realization came during a particularly demanding project where unexpected obstacles caused delays and frustration. I found myself becoming overly critical of minor setbacks, which not only affected my productivity but also my overall well-being. It took a mentor’s gentle reminder that setbacks are part of any journey and that resilience is built through overcoming difficulties.
Learning to unlearn this rigid expectation has been transformative. I’ve come to understand that a bad moment or even a bad day doesn’t define my overall progress or potential. Embracing the Stoic philosophy of accepting what is within my control and letting go of what isn’t has been instrumental. This shift in perspective allows me to bounce back quicker from setbacks, focusing instead on the lessons learned and the opportunities for growth.
Now, when faced with challenges, I remind myself that negativity is temporary and that I have the power to choose how I respond. By acknowledging setbacks as part of the journey, I’ve cultivated a more resilient mindset that not only enhances my productivity but also preserves my mental and emotional well-being.
