We were lucky to catch up with Tiera Zelenoy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tiera, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success is a multifaceted concept that varies significantly from person to person. For me, success encompasses several key elements: loving where I live, being surrounded by a solid support system of family and friends, and having the freedom to engage in activities I love, such as skiing, mountain biking, hiking, yoga, and travel. Additionally, being an active member of my community and giving back through volunteering my time is integral to my definition of success. I feel happy knowing the people in my community and contributing to its well being.
This perspective is rooted in the belief that success should not be tied to hitting specific business benchmarks or achieving material milestones. One of the critical lessons I’ve learned is that the mindset of “I’ll be successful when I achieve X” can create a false sense of happiness. Instead, I believe in viewing each day as a drop that contributes to a much larger bucket of overall life satisfaction. This granular approach allows for daily feelings of success, which accumulate into a fulfilling life.
I’ve developed this viewpoint through observation and personal experiences. I’ve seen many individuals who, despite reaching their defined success markers, still felt unsatisfied. They were caught in a never-ending cycle of seeking validation through external achievements. In contrast, I’ve adopted the philosophy that I am actively building the life I want, and everything that happens is an opportunity for growth and development.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From a young age, I always knew I wanted to go into marketing. My innate creativity and passion for connecting with people guided my education at CU Boulder, where I earned a degree in Marketing with a minor in Technology, Arts, and Media. After graduating, I moved to the mountains and secured my first job at a local company in March 2021, right during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. While I enjoyed the role, I soon realized it wasn’t the right fit for me in the long term.
In January 2022, I took a leap of faith and started my own business, Magic Marketing. Over the past three years, I have honed my services to provide graphic design, brand design and strategy, and website development to small businesses. I believe my unique design style and exceptional customer service set me apart in the industry. By truly understanding my clients and their businesses, I can create brands and websites that are authentic representations of them.
Helping entrepreneurs start their businesses with a strong brand and website is incredibly rewarding. I firmly believe that standing out in today’s saturated market requires thinking outside the box and embracing what makes you unique. Consumers are drawn to brands that resonate with them, making consistent branding essential to attract the ideal client.
I take great pride in the reputation I have built for myself, which reflects my values as both a person and a business owner. Often, I develop close relationships with my clients, becoming their biggest supporter and advocate. Seeing their businesses thrive with the foundations we’ve built together is the most rewarding aspect of my work.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
A significant source of new clients for Magic Marketing comes through word of mouth. The strong reputation I have built for my business speaks volumes, as evidenced by the numerous referrals I receive. By delivering exceptional service and fostering close relationships with my clients, they become my biggest advocates, sharing their positive experiences with their networks. Additionally, my active involvement in the community has greatly contributed to recognition and awareness. Participating in local events and volunteer activities not only allows me to give back but also strengthens my presence and visibility within the community.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A significant lesson I had to unlearn is that I am often my biggest obstacle. Throughout my career, I have repeatedly encountered self-limiting beliefs and imposter syndrome, where I doubted my capabilities and questioned, “What am I doing?” This mindset has hindered my progress on numerous occasions. I realized that these negative thoughts were not genuinely mine but rather echoes of external opinions and societal pressures. To overcome this, I developed a habit of questioning these thoughts, asking myself, “Is this my own belief, or is this someone else’s opinion of me?”
This introspective process has been ongoing and certainly did not happen overnight. Over the past three years, I have consciously worked on building confidence in my skills and abilities. By consistently challenging these limiting beliefs and reminding myself of my accomplishments, I have gradually dismantled the barriers I once placed on myself.
