We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chanel Laurice a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chanel, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
In 2020 at the onset of the shut-down due to COVID – I submitted my two week notice at the bank with no job lined up. Searched for my new apartment online.
I was approved and viewed it from the pictures the leasing office emailed me, I was ‘randomly’ offered a work-from-home position with the state of Michigan (two days before I was to relocate).
I packed up my apartment in Grand Rapids, Michigan, rented a moving truck, and drove to Atlanta, Georgia alone; to create a life on my own terms.
I took a risk without knowing how, but I understood my why.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I invite women on a personal growth journey that leads them to uncovering their true worth.
As a result of my personal journey from multiple teen pregnancies, former high school dropout, homelessness, and toxic relationships. To high school graduate, former founder of teen pregnancy/high school dropout prevention program, author, leader and woman who inspires others to boldly own their truth. It’s imperative I help women weed through and embrace the details of their life. No matter how ugly, disappointing or embarrassing they may be. Helping women to see how those very details increase her value is my goal.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
COVID was at an all time high in June 2020. I gave my employer at the bank my two-week notice. I had no job lined up and only one month’s worth of rent. I had been approved for an apartment I had never seen in person only online; in a city that was more than 900 miles away from my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. I packed up my quaint apartment with sheer determination to live life on my own terms. Two days before I was to relocate, I was offered a remote job from home for the State of Michigan. Even in the midst of fear due to the unknown, I rented a moving truck and at the age of 44, I drove from Michigan to Decatur, Georgia to begin a new life.
In order to experience something different, you have to be willing to do what you’ve never done with zero excuses.
